CALC shows art by tsunami victims
Artwork by Sri Lanka children who suffered during the Dec. 26 tsunami in the Indian Ocean will go on display Friday at Carlisle Arts Learning Center, 19 N. Hanover St.
CALC participated in an international exchange to display art created by young survivors of the tsunami, which killed nearly 160,000 people.
The children worked on their art at a camp held by the Healing Arts for Tsunami Survivors Program of the International Child Art Foundation.
More than 1.5 million children were affected by the tsunami, many of them orphaned.
Months later, some were still terrified by the ocean and afraid to sleep. Some exhibited other signs of trauma, including confusion and aggression.
Therapists help children in the ICAF program express their feelings through art. Other counseling is also available.
Art created by Carlisle area children was displayed at CALC in March, then sent to Sri Lanka for the art exchange. Money was also raised for ICAF.
"We worked with elementary art teachers from the Carlisle Area School District to create the first elementary art show of its kind," says Michele Bulatovic, CALC vice president and gallery committee chairwoman. "The art exchange continues to be a wonderful opportunity for our children to gain some perspective in using their talents and their personal messages to reach out to their worldwide community."
Friday's opening reception for the Sri Lanka children's exhibit will also celebrate the opening of a newly expanded CALC sales gallery and gift shop where works of area artists are on display and for sale. Oils, watercolors, ceramics, sculpture, photography, collage, calligraphy and more are available.
CALC is a nonprofit organization that offers classes to adults, children and teenagers in clay or ceramics, drawing, painting, photography, decorative arts and copper enameling.
Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m.; and Saturday, noon to 3 p.m. For more information, call 249-6973.
