It's all in the details for new shop
Ask Dave McClellan about his new auto detailing business across from the fairgrounds in Carlisle and he will say his is the type of hobby that can easily become a lifestyle.
In fact, that is the story of his life, he says.
Raised on Long Island in New York, the 43-year-old accompanied his father, who collected and showed Model A Fords, to many a competition on the car show circuit.
McClellan says his father was a perfectionist about caring for the old cars. "It had to be perfect," McClellan says. "That's how I learned. I started with him when I was 12 years old."
McClellan grew up to become a street rod enthusiast, collecting and competing himself.
He has competed with as many as eight cars and has watched his hobby evolve into a business.
New opportunity arises
His new shop is at 1322 Spring Road just across from Carlisle Fairgrounds. Prior to taking over this location McClellan built custom bikes/motorcycles in his workshop in Boiling Springs. He was a regular vendor at many of the fairgrounds' car shows, selling parts and promoting his business.
When the Spring Road property became available, it seemed like the perfect move.
"This location is heaven for us," he says. "Of course we service any retail customer who is need of our services, but we are also servicing wholesale customers."
Among McClellan's "wholesale clients" are Carlisle Productions, CR's Motorcar Co., Graham Motors of Carlisle and Willow View Auto Sales.
Bike wash planned
Recognizing the needs of the community and benefits of involving himself with charitable organizations, McClellan already has donated his time and services to Carlisle Productions' summer auction to benefit the Salvation Army.
And on Saturday he will sponsor a benefit bike wash in conjunction with Bike Fest at the fairgrounds. The bike wash will run from 10 a.m.to 3 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Chip Miller Foundation, which was formed to raise funds for the research, education and awareness of amyloidosis and related diseases.
Miller, co-owner of Carlisle Productions, died March 25, 2004 of amyloidosis.
The Detail Shop, which offers a full range of detailing services that range in price from $10 to $109, is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. till 5:30 p.m.
Car show participants can arrange for a special appointment while in town over car show weekends.
Customers may call 258-3342 to request a "menu" of services and make appointments. They also may go online to McClellan's website at www.carlisledetail.com, and can even make arrangements to park on the premises during events at the fairgrounds by logging on to www.carsatcarlisleparking.com
