Mid-Penn ready to tee off
Carlisle golf coach Mike Black lost the heart of his 2004 team to graduation.
He will have to rely on the lone returning veteran, senior Jason Hartline, to lead a collection of inexperienced players as they compete with the likes of Chambersburg and Waynesboro in 2005.
The Thundering Herd finished division play last year with an 8-22 mark (fifth place), and an overall record of 12-22. Hartline averaged 83 last year to qualify for a berth in the Mid-Penn Conference tournament, but advanced no further in postseason action.
"We're young," said Black. "We want to be competitive, and try to improve with every match. I think that if the kids can shoot in the mid to high 80s, we should be OK."
Black is looking to a quintet of players to complement Hartline. They are senior Zach Johns, junior Corey Gelbaugh, sophomores Austin Dieter and Travis Stodter, and freshman Mick Farling.
Cumberland Valley has a new coach in Butch Bricker. He replaces long-time Eagle mentor Scott Stoner, who stepped down after 22 years. Bricker inherits a program that, measured by historical standards, slipped a little in 2004. The Eagles went 12-18 in the tough Commonwealth Division, but managed to finish in third place.
Bricker has a solid returning performer in Kevin Dederer. The CV senior copped third place in the 2004 Mid-Penn Conference tournament, and went on to District play. A bevy of underclassmen back up Dederer. They are juniors Dave Kalman, Andrew May and Andrew Reese. Sophomore L. J. Scurfield and freshmen Jordan Shuey and Chris Slike constitute the balance of promising players.
Other schools in the Commonwealth Division are Cedar Cliff, Chambersburg, Gettysburg and Waynesboro.
Editor's note
Mid-Penn golf short and intense, with the division play little more than a month in duration.
The dwindling afternoon daylight of September is largely responsible for the condensed schedule.
Conference, district and state tournaments follow in October. And for most high school golfers, scholastic competition is the culmination of the links season. Thereafter, they put away the sticks and go on to other endeavors, athletic or otherwise.
Below is a preview of the 2005 Mid-Penn Conference golf teams in the Sentinel region. The schools represented are spread across three of the conference's four golf divisions.
