Snow expected to melt quickly

The National Weather Service reports snow totals of 6.5 inches in Carlisle and 6 inches in Mechanicsburg as a result of the weekend’s snowstorm.
But don’t expect to see that much snow now. The heavy, wet flakes quickly settled and warming temperatures that are expected to reach into the low 50s by Thursday will melt the layer of white.
“The snow, pretty much by Thursday at the latest, should be gone,” NWS meteorologist Victor Cruz says.
Cumberland County’s weather is expected to turn cloudy today and remain cloudy through Thursday, Cruz says. Temperatures by Wednesday should reach into the upper 40s before breaking the 50-degree mark the next day.
Thursday night brings a 30 percent chance of rain showers and Friday’s forecast calls for cooler temperatures with a chance of rain and snow showers, he says.
Water levels normal
While Cumberland County was dealt a glancing blow, the snowstorm was the biggest ever in New York City, with 26.9 inches of snow recorded.
Local snowfall has been below average so far this winter but plenty of rain has fallen.
Last month 4.01 inches of rainfall were recorded at an NWS site in Shippensburg.
United States Geological Survey statistics show that ground water and surface water levels are normal to above normal for this time of year.
