The Department of Environmental Protection has issued an emergency permit to the Bloomfield Borough Water Authority to use unfiltered spring water so it can replenish its drinking water supply.

The move requires the authority to issue a "boil water" advisory until further notice, institute mandatory water-use restrictions and increase the amount of chlorine.

The authority also is receiving 10,000 gallons of water daily through an interconnection with New Bloomfield's Carson Long Military Institute, which has its own separate water supply.

In addition, DEP staff have contacted Perry County and local officials in surrounding communities to make them aware of the lack of water for firefighting in Bloomfield.

The authority's two reservoirs are served by two wells. The primary well has stopped producing water and the secondary well, which normally operates only a few hours per day, has been unable to keep up with demand. The result has been reduced water pressure throughout the entire distribution system, which serves approximately 1,100 residents.

DEP recommends that all water used for drinking or cooking be heated to a rapid boil for one minute. A hot water heater may not kill all disease-causing microorganisms, so boiled water should be used to wash vegetables and other foods that require washing.
