Advance tickets for The Sentinel's Taste of Home Cooking School Tuesday, March 27, are available at The Sentinel offices, 457 E. North St., Carlisle. Tickets are $10 each and all seats are general admission.

Culinary specialist Kate Gabriele will present a variety of tantalizing brunch, dinner and dessert dishes at Boiling Springs High School. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. for the public to enjoy vendor exhibits in the cafeteria and sample and vote in a chili cook-off. The show begins at 7 p.m.

Cooking trends are ever changing and leisurely dining is making a comeback, Gabriele notes. Taking time to appreciate every bite and enjoy both the food and the social experience is catching on as a healthy trend. Awakening to savor the flavors of food has renewed interest in seasoning.

“I'm very excited about the selection of recipes I'll be sharing with audiences this season,” Gabriele says.

Dishes prepared on stage

Recipes prepared on stage will include a super quick jam that's packed with beneficial ingredients. “Apple-Berry Pomegranate Freezer Jam” will brighten any breakfast or brunch table. Pomegranates are becoming a popular recipe ingredient because of their many health benefits. The juice is extremely rich in antioxidants, vitamins A, B and C and oxalic acids. Pomegranates are a vibrant red berry with hundreds of seeds that are the source of the sweet, tangy, juice. If your aim is to eat healthy, this recipe is a must.

Looking to spice up your meals a notch? “Spanish-Style Paella” combines sausage, chicken and shrimp with rice. The spicy flavor comes from a blend of spices that includes the distinct aroma of saffron. Saffron is the yellow-orange stigmas of the purple crocus plant. Each flower has 3 stigmas, which must be handed-picked. More than 14,000 tiny stigmas are needed to produce just one ounce of saffron. No wonder it is the world's most precious spice. Fortunately, its strong intense flavor means cooks can use it sparingly to achieve appetizing results.

Everyone who attends will receive a complementary “Taste of Home Cooking School Classic Cooking” magazine with all 10 featured recipes plus 150 more Taste of Home-tested, -tasted and -approved recipes. A $5.99 value, this cookbook is included in the free gift bag everyone receives when entering the auditorium.

“If you have never attended a Taste of Home Cooking School, make plans now to join the festivities,” says Lauren Deardorff of The Sentinel. “Your name might be drawn for one of the many fantastic door prizes we have collected.”

Local businesses have donated a variety of merchandise. National sponsors who work in association with the cooking school have contributed special gifts, as well.

Taste of Home Cooking School is pleased to have the new “Taste of Home Cookbook” available to award to three lucky winners.

“Taste of Home is about great food and real people who take pride in what they cook and have fun doing it,” Gabriele says. “People treasure Taste of Home recipes, but they value equally the connection they feel with other cooks just like themselves who want their families leaving the table full, happy and raving about their meals now and for generation to come.

“The Taste of Home Cookbook is an everything-you-need durable reference book. This is one book you will want to add to your library of cookbooks.”
