Local College Round up: McDonald named Centennial Player of the Week

Right out of the gate, Dickinson College junior Kaitlyn McDonald was named the Centennial Conference Softball Player of the Week Tuesday.

McDonald led the Red Devils to a 2-2 start this season. Dickinson opened the season with a 10-9 win over Lakeland College, then fell to Iowa Lakes 8-0. They split games on Monday as well, falling 7-1 to Greenville and rebounding with a 12-1 win over Marian.

McDonald is one of the Devils' top hitters so far with a .600 average (9-for-15). She has driven in five runs and scored four, with a pair of doubles and a home run.

Dickinson pitcher Alison Jordan was named to the Centennial Conference honor roll, posting wins in both appearances in the circle. She pitched all eight innings against Lakeland, winning 10-9, and threw five innings to defeat Marian 12-1. She had five strikeouts, allowed four earned runs, and surrendered one walk.

Baseball

Dickinson 5, North Park 2

The Dickinson College baseball team posted its second win of the young season with a 5-2 decision over North Park on Monday.

Senior Matt Eonta earned the win with six innings of work. Zack Pollack pitched well in relief as well and Brian Kelley picked up the save. Rob Gilgrest went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Devils at the plate. Luke Volker was 2-for-4 with an RBI as well.

Tennis

Dickinson men 5,

Mississippi College 4

Pavel Hejsek won his fourth straight singles match to break a 4-4 tie and lead the Dickinson College men's tennis team to a 5-4 win over Mississippi College on Tuesday.

Hejsek dropped the opening set 6-3, but rallied to tie the match, winning 6-3 in the second set. He went on to win with a 10-6 decision in the super tiebreaker, defeating Porter Glover, who is ranked 24th in the South Atlantic Region.

Hejsek also earned a point in the third doubles flight, joining classmate Matt Wood for an 8-4 win.

Red Devil Hunter Holbrook rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the opening set for a 7-5, 6-2 victory in the third flight.

Trevor Heck and Robbie Dickinson were straight-set winners in the fifth and sixth singles flights.

The Devils (4-1) face Rhodes College today. Rhodes is ranked ninth in the South Atlantic Region with a 7-1 record.

Wheaton women 6,

Dickinson 3

The Dickinson College women's tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision to Wheaton College on Monday.

Annie McGillicuddy and Maya Ginsburg scored points for the Devils with singles wins at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively.

Amanda Kaplan and Erica Tobias captured No. 1 doubles, defeating the Northeast Region's 19th ranked doubles team of Jamie Weiss and Katie Knies 8-6.

Men's lacrosse

St. Mary's 11, Dickinson 10

The Dickinson College men's lacrosse team erased a five-goal deficit, but could not pull even with St. Mary's on Tuesday afternoon.

The Red Devils slip to 2-2 on the season. They return home to face Roanoke College on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Women's lacrosse

William Smith 13,

Dickinson 9

The 11th ranked Dickinson College women's lacrosse team dropped a battle of ranked teams, as 20th ranked William Smith claimed a 13-9 decision Tuesday.

The Red Devils slip to 2-2 on the season. They will face Montclair State at 9 a.m. on Thursday.

Men's basketball

NCAA East region Finals

Barton 76, Millersville 65

The Millersville University men's basketball team had its season come to an end after a 76-65 loss to Barton College in the NCAA East Region Final on Tuesday night at Wilson Gymnasium in Wilson, N.C.

Guard Greg Testa led the third seeded Marauders with 16 points. Guard Charlie Parker followed up with a double-double, 14 points and 10 rebounds. Forward Reggie Bates finished with 10 points.

Top seeded Barton was led in scoring by guard Alejo Barovero's 18 points. Guard Anthony Atkinson added 13 points. Center Mark Friscone contributed 12 points, while forward L.J. Dunn dropped in 11 points in a reserve role.

Barton is now 28-5 and advances to the Elite Eight which begins March 21 in Springfield, Mass. The Bulldogs are in the Elite Eight for the second consecutive year.

Millersville ends the season with a 28-5 record. The team set a new mark for wins in a season.
