SYBA Girls' Basketball: Nets sweep SYBA finals

The Nets claimed the girls' varsity playoff championship of the Shippensburg Youth Basketball Association, defeating the Sparks by a score of 10-7.

The Sparks advanced to the championship by upsetting the Spurs and the Suns earlier in the playoff series.

The Nets also won the JV girls' playoff title, topping the Spurs 8-5.

Varsity playoffs

March 8

Starrz 14, Comets 13

The Starrz jumped ahead early and then survived a second-half charge by the Comets, winning 14-13.

Shayla Keller scored four of her eight points in the first half as the Starrz went ahead 8-2. Kaylee Beattie and Colby Gehrke each added a bucket.

The Comets came back in the second half, outscoring the Starrz 11-6, but it wasn't enough. Heather Hockenberry led the way with four of her six points. Allison Williams added three, and Brianna Kelso and Allison Reddig chipped in two each.

Hannah Ashberry scored two points to round out the scoring for the Starrz.

Sparks 10, Spurs 8

The Sparks took an early lead and defeated the Spurs 10-8.

Ashley Myers had four points for the Sparks, who led 8-4 at halftime. Gretchen Diehl, Kyla Line and Katy Rule followed with two points each.

Alissa Herman scored four points for the Spurs. Bryce Arnold and Krista Rockwell had two points each.

Suns 18, Hounds 8

Alysia Clawson scored 10 points to lead the Suns to an 18-8 victory over the Hounds.

The first half was the difference in the game. Led by Clawson, who had eight of her points in the first half, the Suns took an early 16-4 lead.

The Hounds came back in the second half, outscoring the Suns 4-2, but it wasn't enough.

Nicole Macedo and Ashley Rebok added four points each for the Suns.

Morgan Newell, Krystal Helm, Miranda Heberlig and Morgan Frey scored two points apiece for the Hounds.

Nets 35, Starrz 17

The Nets used balanced scoring in their 35-17 triumph over the Starrz.

Tiffany Perry and Ashley Valentine scored six points each in the first half as the Nets took an early 24-5 lead. The Starrz outscored the Nets 12-11 in the second half, but it wasn't enough.

Perry and Ali Koser led the Nets with eight points each in the game. MaKiela Burkholder and Paige Detweiler finished with four points apiece, Courtney Gossert followed with three, and Kylee Miller added two.

Kayle Beattie led the Starrz with six points. Sarah Lyman and Saira Clippinger scored three points each, Hannah Ashberry and Colby Gehrke followed with two apiece, and Shayla Keller added one.

Sparks 17, Suns 12

The Sparks topped the Suns 17-12 to advance to the championship game.

The Sparks led 9-6 at halftime, and they outscored the Suns 8-6 in the second half.

Gretchen Diehl led the Sparks with eight points. Ali Smith followed with six points, Ellen Diehl had two points, and Kyla Line added one.

Nicole Macedo and Ashley Rebok led the Suns with four points apiece. Alysia Clawson and Leslie Brown had two each.

March 10

Nets 10, Sparks 7

The Nets jumped ahead early and went on to defeat the Sparks 10-7 for the playoff title.

Kylee Miller (five points) and Courtney Kane (two) did all of their scoring as the Nets took a 7-4 lead at halftime. Ashley Myers hit a basket for the Sparks, and Cristy Jones and Alie Smith added foul shots.

Both teams scored three points in the second half. Ali Koser had all three for the Nets, and Jones (two) and Kyla Line (one) scored for the Sparks.

March 8

Comets 5, Starrz 2

The Comets advanced by defeating the Starrz 5-2.

A foul shot by Denise Lovett gave the Comets a 1-0 lead at halftime. In the second half, Lovett and Courtney Mason scored baskets as the Comets outscored the Starrz 4-2. Shelby Horst had the Comets' bucket.

Spurs 20, Sparks 2

Liz McCurdy scored 12 points to lead the Spurs to a 20-2 victory over the Sparks.

McCurdy had eight of her points in the first half as the Spurs jumped ahead 10-2. In the second half, Janay Hamilton added four of her six points, and Ty Fitchet scored two, as the Spurs rolled to the win.

Taylor Wiser scored the Sparks' points.

Hounds 9, Suns 5

The Hounds used a big second half to win their game against the Suns, 9-5.

The game was tied 4-4 at halftime. Leara Swartz had all four points for the Hounds, while Alicia Macedo hit a pair of baskets for the Suns.

In the second half, the Hounds outscored the Suns 5-1. Lauren Smith had four points, while Swartz added a foul shot. Macedo sank a free throw for the Suns.

Nets 15, Comets 6

Danielle Fasnacht led the Nets to a 15-6 win against the Comets.

The Nets led 8-4 at halftime. Fasnacht had eight of her 10 points for the Nets, while Hattie Lynch (two) and Drew Lovett and Carly Janifer (one each) scored for the Comets.

In the second half, the Nets coasted to the win by outscoring the Comets 7-2.

Also scoring in the game for the Nets were Courtney Gossert and Amanda MacLaughlin with two points each, and Courtney Rine with one.

Denise Lovett added a basket for the Comets.

Spurs 6, Hounds 1

The Spurs advanced to the finals by defeating the Hounds 6-1.

Liz McCurdy scored all six points for the Spurs. She had four in the first half as the Spurs took an early 4-1 lead. Emily Ott had the Hounds' foul shot.

JV championship game

March 10

Nets 8, Spurs 5

The Nets came from behind to defeat the Spurs 8-5 for the championship.

The Spurs led 5-2 at halftime on baskets by Ty Fitchet and Emily Wolford and a foul shot by Liz McCurdy. Amanda MacLaughlin had a basket for the Nets.

In the second half, however, the Nets outscored the Spurs 6-0 to pull out the win. Nicole Baker sank three foul shots, Danielle Fasnacht hit a basket, and Courtney Gossert added a free throw.
