Andrew Boynton, a sixth-grade student at Eagle View Middle School in the Cumberland Valley School District, has been named a semifinalist in the 2007 Pennsylvania Geographic Bee sponsored by JPMorgan Chase.

The bees were held in schools with fourth- through eighth-grade students throughout the state to determine a winner at each. School-level winners then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. The National Geographic Society invited the students with the top 100 scores to compete at the state level.

Andrew will attend the Pennsylvania Geographic Bee at the Ceddia Union Building at Shippensburg University on Friday, March 30.

The state winner will represent Pennsylvania in the national finals at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C., in May. The state winner also will receive $100. The national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship.

Word Power Challenge

Three Eagle View Middle students attended the state championship competition of the Reader’s Digest National Word Power Challenge on March 19. To qualify, sixth-grader Sydney Wilcox, seventh-grader Vincent Spinelli and eighth-grader Rishabh Iyer answered oral and written questions challenging their vocabulary skills while competing against students of the same grade level across the state. At the state competition Rishabh placed in the top 10 out of 100 competitors.

Several Cumberland Valley School District students won awards at the 10th annual Shippensburg University Sigma Tau Delta writing contest.

Brady McCormick won second place for his poems in the creative division and received a $50 prize.

Georgia DuCharme won first place for her story, “Painting With Your Heart,” in the creative division for fiction and received a $75 prize.

The pieces will be published in an anthology of winning contest entries to be given to winners and their teachers. They also are invited to a celebratory brunch on May 5 at the Century Cafe on the SU campus.

Her essay will be sent to the Northeast Region for the next level of the competition. She also received a $50 savings bond for her effort.
