Testimony continues today in Cumberland County Court in the case of a Mechanicsburg man who is on trial for sexually assaulting a young girl.

The jury trial for Henry Newton, 38, began Tuesday before Cumberland County Judge Edward Guido.

In opening statements, Assistant District Attorney Christin Mehrtens-Carlin told the jury that Newton assaulted the girl for more than nine years, starting when she was 4 and ending in 2004, when she was 13.

The teen, who during jury selection Tuesday morning clutched a stuffed animal and took turns sitting next to various family members as they comforted her, will take the stand.

Newton’s wife, Patricia, is expected to testify today against her husband about the abuse that occurred in their home, Mehrtens-Carlin said. Patricia Newton remains at the state prison in Cambridge Springs, where she is serving a term of 2 1/2 to 5 years for raping a child and setting up a webcam in her home.

Henry Newton is on trial for involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, indecent assault, aggravated indecent assault, criminal attempt to rape a child, incest and corruption of minors. He is in Cumberland County Prison on $750,000 bail.

He previously was convicted of raping a child and filming the act and was serving time in state prison when he was charged in August with assaulting the young girl.
