When spring finally arrives in Carlisle, it will face a warm reception.

“I’m super pumped that it’s going to be warm this weekend,” said Annie Gibala, a Dickinson College freshman from Washington, D.C. “I’ve been hating the cold.”

Gibala, who was wearing long pants and a hot pink hoodie, said at first the colder weather seemed a fair trade-off for the balmy temperatures she enjoyed over winter break. But no more.

“We’ve paid our debt,” she said. “It’s time for summer: No more sweaters and sweatshirts.”

She said she was happy to hear that meteorologists are predicting that the mercury will soar to at least 70 degrees Saturday and Sunday, with nary a cloud in sight. This weekend, Gibala said, she’s heading to Pittsburgh to help celebrate her grandmother’s 80th birthday.

When she returns, Gibala said, “I’ll probably go golfing.”

Carlisle resident Melissa Walteos, who was roaming town taking pictures of flowers and trees, was also excited about the prospect of a slightly more tropical climate — especially since her plans for the weekend include being outside.

Headed to flea market

“I’m going to the flea market Sunday,” Walteos said, noting that this will be her first visit to the Williams Grove location.

Jenna Banning, a Dickinson freshman from Massachusetts who was out walking with friends, said wryly that she had thought moving eight hours south might gain her warmer weather. But, she said, “It’s usually about the same.”

And, said Banning, who’s on the track team at Dickinson, she’s ready for that to change: “I’m tired of wearing Spandex to workouts.”

J.P. Stevenson, a Dickinson freshman from Seattle, Wash., agreed that he’s ready for a change.

Stevenson said he likes having rain at home, “but rain here is completely different from at home.” Here, he said, it’s “depressing.”

“The weather lately has been so crazy,” he said, noting that his mother and sister visited recently and were treated to flurries. Meanwhile, Stevenson said, his father called and said he was enjoying 70-degree weather.

When the sun shines again, he said, “We sprawl out on the lawn....”

Anxious for spring

“I would love to have my lighter clothing out again,” said Benazir Akbar, a Dickinson senior from India who was swathed in a fur-trimmed coat Thursday. “The irony is that I did get them out, then it started to get cold again.”

In India, she said, “It is hot and humid — the opposite of here.” When she went home one summer, the climate adjustment was a little hard, she said, “but I was happy because I got to wear cool clothes.”

“I’m sure the girls on campus would like to have the warm weather so they can wear the teeny-weeny summer dresses,” she said.

But while everyone seemed to be happy about the second coming of spring, at least one person doesn’t want it to give way to summer too soon.

“I don’t like the humidity,” said John Miyahara, who works on the Dickinson staff. Seventy degrees is good, he said, and so is 80, but he doesn’t like it when it gets much hotter.

“I was in New Orleans last year, and I hated it,” he said.
