Flowers and a sign are displayed on a tree where 19-year-old Cumberland Valley High School grad Cole Baublitz died in a two-car crash Wednesday at the intersection of Route 174 and West Lisburn Road (marked by a circle on the map).
Skid marks lead to a telephone pole where an unidentified victim died in a one-car accident Thursday night on West Lisburn Road, about 2 miles from Wednesday’s accident (marked by a star on the map).
Police are investigating a fatal crash Thursday on West Lisburn Road, the second in as many days on the busy road east of Carlisle.
The latest crash happened in South Middleton Township as a vehicle traveling west in the 800 block of West Lisburn Road at 11:30 p.m. left the road and struck a utility pole, ejecting the driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, says Chief Deputy Coroner Todd Eckenrode.
The identity of the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene, is being withheld until family members are notified, Eckenrode says.
State Police at Carlisle and the coroner’s office continue to investigate that crash, as well as the fatality that took place about two miles down the road just a day and a half earlier.
A crash at 8:07 a.m. Wednesday at West Lisburn and Route 174 claimed the life of Cole M. Baublitz, 19, a 2006 graduate of Cumberland Valley High School and former heavyweight wrestler for the Eagles. Funeral services will be held Monday for Baublitz, who was a student at HACC. For obituary details, turn to B2.
The driver of a second car involved in the accident, Susan A. Daisley, 49, of Mechanicsburg, was upgraded to fair condition at Hershey Medical Center.
Police say Baublitz was driving a black Dodge Neon on west on West Lisburn Road, ran a stop sign at Route 174 and was hit by a white Honda Accord driven by Daisley traveling south on Route 174.
Following the impact, the Dodge went airborne and hit a tree. The Honda ran into the side of a house.
Residents who live near the intersection say they have been concerned about safety for a while.
The fatal accident at that intersection was the second in the last couple of months, said Monroe Township secretary Marge Metzger, noting that several nonfatal accidents also have occurred during that time.
“Residents are concerned,” she said following Wednesday’s crash. “They want something done. They ask what they could do to help.”
Monroe Township supervisors would like PennDOT to do a traffic study of both Lisburn Road and Route 174, which are state roads, and do whatever it takes to make the intersection safer.
