Ohio running back commits to Penn State
In need of a running back for its 2008 recruiting class, Penn State may have just found its man.
Brandon Beachum, the fourth best prospect in the state of Ohio and one of the top five running backs in the country according to one recruting service, gave a verbal commitment to play for the Nittany Lions at a press conference in his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio, this afternoon.
Beachum picked the Nittany Lions over Wisconsin, Florida State, Nebraska and LSU. He also had offers from Oklahoma and Illinois.
As a running back, Beachum rushed for 1,500 yards and 16 touchdowns a season ago for Cardinal Mooney. As a linebacker he recorded 12 sacks to lead Cardinal Mooney to the Ohio Division IV state title.
It is likely Beachum will be a running back when he enrolls at PSU in January of 2008.
Beachum is the fifth player to join the Nittany Lion class of 2008, which includes Zordich, Blue Mountain lineman Matt Stankiewitch, and linebackers Michael Mauti and Mike Yancich.
In need of a running back in its upcoming recruiting class, Penn State is still in the mix for the one of the top backs in the country in Darrell Scott from St. Bonaventure in Ventura, Cal.
Scott's list includes Florida, Florida State, Michigan, LSU, Penn State, Texas and West Virginia.
The Nittany Lions are still among the favorites for the top prospect in Pennsylvania, Jeanette's Terrelle Pryor.
Penn State has also become the favorite for Altoona's A.J. Alexander, who decommitted from Florida State a few weeks ago.
The 5'10 Alexander, who plays quarterback for the Mountain Lions, recently told Scout.com that he favors the Nittany Lions over everyone else on his list. He is projected as a wide receiver in college
