For Richard “Dick” Heckendorn, life was all about the ride.

He died doing what he enjoyed: riding a motorcycle.

Heckendorn, of Newville, died two years ago at age 57 from injuries sustained in a bike crash about a mile from his home, but his memory lives on in an annual poker run.

The second annual poker run in his memory will be held Saturday beginning at American Legion Post 421, 28 Shepherd Road, Newville.

“We donate the money we raise to a scholarship fund,” explained Harry Wyrick.

Big Spring High School students are eligible to write an essay. Last year’s topic was, “What is the purpose of the men and women in the military?” Two $500 scholarships were given away to the contest winners.

Loved cycling

“Dick rode motorcycles all the time. He loved cycling,” Wyrick said.

In a poker run, participants travel over a predesignated route and stop at specific locations along the way to draw a playing card. The object is to have the best poker hand at the end of the run. First prize is $200; second prize is $100; and third prize is $50.

The ride is being sponsored by American Legion Riders.

About 65 people turned out for last year’s run.

“It was raining,” Wyrick said. “This year, we’re hoping for over 100.”

The poker run isn’t limited to motorcycle riders.

“You don’t have to have a motorcycle,” Wyrick said. “Drive an SUV or car, whatever you want.” Last year there were as many cars as bikes in the run.

Registration beings at 10 a.m., the ride begins at 11. Riders must return by 4:30 p.m. Cost is $15 per rider and $10 per passenger and includes refreshments and a chicken barbecue after the ride.

Wyrick said he thinks Heckendorn would be thrilled with the tribute.

“I think he’d be overwhelmed,” he said.
