The Carlisle Crossings shopping center in South Middleton Township will soon have two new discount stores joining the Target/Kohl’s line-up.

Dollar Tree opened recently near PetSmart, and Aldi will open in a couple of weeks.

Dollar Tree, Inc., based in Chesapeake, Va., is the nation’s largest $1 discount variety store chain, selling an array of housewares, food, heath and beauty items and more -- all priced at $1.

Dollar Tree has 3,401 stores in 48 states and about 185 in Pennsylvania.

The new 10,000-square-foot store was relocated from the Carlisle Marketplace shopping center.

“Dollar Tree likes to be where middle America is shopping,” explained Shelly Davis, spokesperson for Dollar Tree. “We’re happy to be in the area. Anyone looking for a fast, fun shopping experience should check us out.”

Aldi, a discount grocery store, will open Dec. 6.

According to the company Web site, Aldi keeps prices low for shoppers by cutting costs throughout the store. For example, shoppers are encouraged to bring their own bags or boxes or pay for Aldi bags for a “nominal” charge.

Aldi also charges a 25-cent deposit to use a shopping cart, which is returned when the cart is returned.

“This system cuts down on the labor of collecting carts left in the parking lot, damage to cars, and we pass the savings on to you,” the Web site reads.

Aldi first opened in 1976 in Iowa and has grown to include more than 850 stores in 26 states and ranks 24th in gross sales in U.S. grocery chains, according to Supermarket News.

Aldi carries only 1,000 frequently purchased grocery and household items, most under Aldi’s private labels.
