Wednesday, Nov. 21

Thanksgiving service set

Shippensburg community members and local churches join together for an evening worship service at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, at Messiah United Methodist Church, 30 S. Penn St.

The musical prelude featuring the piano and organ will begin at 6:45 p.m.

Messiah is accessible to the handicapped. Parking attendants will be available. The public is welcome to attend this community service.

Thursday, Nov. 22

Thanksgiving dinner set

Shippensburg First Wesleyan Church will host a Thanksgiving Day Dinner at 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 22, at the church, 593 Walnut Bottom Road.

The meal is free and open to all. It is the mission of the church to see nobody in the Shippensburg area is without Thanksgiving dinner or spend the holiday alone.

Friday, Nov. 23

Singles dance planned

The Alternative to the Bar Scene Singles Dance for those ages 21 or over will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight Friday, Nov. 23, at the Knights of Columbus, 20340 Leitersburg Pike, Hagerstown, Md.

There will be music provided by a DJ, cash bar, snacks, and door prizes. Dress is casual. Cost is $4 for members and $5 for nonmembers.

Monday, Nov. 26

Infant bereavement support group to meet

An Infant Bereavement Support Group will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, at the Women’s Center in the new Carlisle Regional Medical Center in South Middleton Township.

The group is for those who have lost a baby though miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth or newborn loss.

There is no fee, but registration is required by 3 p.m. the day the group meets.

Speaker focusing on Civil War documentary

The Franklin County Historical Society — Kittochtinny invites the local community to the annual dinner meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at Family Traditions Lighthouse Restaurant, 4301 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg.

The speaker will be Mary Carlson, who will talk about her planned documentary based on Ed Ayers Civil War “Valley of the Shadow” Web site and book.

There will also be a review of the society’s recent projects and a projection of the society’s future needs after dinner.

The reception will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the dinner will be at 7 p.m.

Dinner reservations are required; cost is $30 per person.

Sunday, Dec. 2

Help hang greens at Trinity

Participate in the traditional Hanging of the Greens celebration at Trinity United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2.

This family celebration involves decorating the sanctuary and hearing lots of Christmas music and traditions and is open to the public. The Trinity Band will be playing its own rendition of “Hark the Herald Angels Swing” (not sing). The Children’s Choir will be singing “Away in a Manger” and helping to decorate the Christmas tree throughout the evening. The Trinity Chancel Choir will present “Candle Medley.” The congregation will be singing a variety of seasonal songs as the many traditions of Christmas are presented in the program.

Beth Zeiler, assistant director of music at Trinity, is coordinating the 7 p.m. service with help from Corrie Wadel, who is organizing the decorating of the sanctuary. Many individuals of all ages are actively involved in the evening’s Christmas traditions, which will be explained by the storyteller and liturgist. Come learn about the use of greens, bells, candles, stars, angels, poinsettias, Chrismons, and, of course, the figures of the creche in the Christian celebration of the birth of Christ.

Trinity United Methodist Church is at 118 W. Main St. (Route 174, the Walnut Bottom Road) in the village of Walnut Bottom.

The church pastor is the Rev. Dr. Karl R. Herman, who is also directing the band for the evening service. The church Web site is www.trinitywb.org.

Volleyball is for singles

The Alternative to the Bar Scene sponsors mixed singles volleyball for men and women every Monday evening from 7-9 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church on the corner of West Washington and South Prospect streets in Hagerstown, Md..

Ceramics on display at SU

Ceramics by Jason Green are on display at Kauffman Gallery in Huber Art Center at Shippensburg University.

A gallery talk and reception will be held from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at the end of the exhibit.

Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to noon Friday, and also 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Miniature art Show is in Chambersburg

Miniature Art 2007 will open Thursday at the Council for the Arts office and gallery space at 159 South Main Street, Chambersburg.

The exhibit, sponsored by Noelker & Hull Associates, will continue through Jan. 12 and features 177 works by artists from 23 states.

Shape Gallery showing group of local artists

The Shape Gallery in Shippensburg is hosting an exhibit featuring the work of over a dozen area artists who refer to themselves as “The Art Group.”

Many of the artists will be present at “meet the artists” reception of the exhibit “Dinner and a Critique” from 6-8 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Shape Gallery, 39 E. King St., Shippensburg.

Exhibit dates are Nov. 2-21. Admission is free.

Regular gallery hours are 4-7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

Many members of the Art Group have displayed their work in museums and galleries around Pennsylvania as well as other states.

“Dinner and a Critique” features a variety of mediums including acrylics, calligraphy, watercolor and photography.

Williamsburg Dinner

The 15th annual Colonial Christmas at Christ United Methodist Church will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the church at 47 E. King St. in Shippensburg.

The Williamsburg dinner will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $7 for children 6-12 years. Tickets may be purchased at the church office between 9 a.m. and noon Monday through Friday and at the Shippensburg Chamber of Commerce, East Meets West Emporium, and, from Thursday through Saturday, at Crider’s Meats.

Art Alliance Offers trip to National Gallery

On Sunday, Dec. 2, the Franklin County Art Alliance will host a bus trip to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

Special exhibitions on view for the trip include the works of Edward Hopper, an artist who produced some of the outstanding masterpieces of modern American art, and J.M.W. Turner, one of the greatest landscape painters in the history of art.

Ticket price of $45 includes bus fare and driver gratuity; no charge for museum entry. Lunch is “on your own.” There are restaurants at the museum or participants may “brown bag” it.
