KYFL: Hounds sweep Rockets
The Shippensburg Greyhounds swept the Mercersburg Rockets in their opening weekend of Keystone Youth Football League action Saturday. Playing in the heat and humidity, the Greyhounds topped Mercersburg 19-6 in the varsity game, 6-0 in the mid-varsity game, and 12-7 in the JV contest.
Varsity: Shippensburg 19, Mercersburg 6
Luke Allison rushed for 112 yards and scored two Shippensburg touchdowns in the Greyhounds' 19-6 triumph. Robbie Keyes had an extra point and scored once for the Greyhounds on a fumble recovery.
Shippensburg led 6-0 after the first quarter. The Greyhounds completed their scoring in the second quarter, leading 19-6 at halftime. There was no scoring in the second half.
Keyes finished with 24 yards rushing, and Jared Furry added 17.
Mac Miller was 1-for-3 passing with a 36-yard completion to Kaleb Shields. Devon Bentley was 1-for-2 with a 6-yard strike to Jacob Blevins.
Leading Shippensburg on defense were Allison, Keyes and Ryan Frey, who each made five tackles in the game. Blevins followed with three tackles, Brandon Stitt and Matt Chiappelli had two each, and Furry, Carey Hess, Nick Morris, Nathan Thrush, Stephen Wingert and Brett Tauble each had one.
Stitt also recovered a fumble.
Mid-Varsity: Shippensburg 6, Mercersburg 0
Bradley Cleary tallied the game's only touchdown, scoring from 31 yards out in the first quarter and helping Shippensburg to a 6-0 win.
Cleary rushed for a total of 67 yards. Dylan Herb gained 11 yards on the ground, and Daguan Woods added 2.
William Burt caught one pass for 10 yards.
Quarterback Zaen Miller was 1-for-2 for 10 yards.
Burt led Shippensburg in tackles with five. He also had a sack.
Chris Williams made four stops in the game. Joshua Trippett had two tackles, and Zachary Martin, Cameron Hammaker, Benjamin Ile, Daniel Reynolds, Cade Myers, Seth Frey and Nathan Holtry each had one.
Martin also recovered a fumble.
Junior Varsity
The Greyhounds used a pair of second-quarter touchdowns to post a 12-7 victory.
After a scoreless first quarter, Shippensburg got on the board in the second and led 12-0 at halftime. Elijah Hoffert and Matthew Frick scored the touchdowns for the Greyhounds.
Mercersburg rallied in the final quarter, cutting the score to 12-7 before time ran out.
Hoffert finished with 87 yards rushing in the game. Cameron Tinner followed with 18 yards, Andrew Norman ran for 14, Frick rushed for 9, and Jereme Howard added 2.
Cole Friese led Shippensburg's defense with five tackles. Norman had two stops, and Luke Hershey, Tinner, Glen Spahr, Taylor Farling, Brandt Swartz, Garrett Kyner, Trevor Ott, Logan Bishop and Brandon Smith had one each.
Spahr and Kyner each recorded a sack in the game.
