The Steep Canyon Rangers will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, in the Good Life Cafe, 26 N. Hanover St., Carlisle. The Steep Canyon Rangers have carved out a special spot in the world of bluegrass music, creating a sound that looks forward and backwards at the same time. The H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center and the Office of Social Equity at Shippensburg University, present Sweet Honey In The Rock at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22. The dynamic, all-female, Grammy award-winning group sings unaccompanied except for rhythms they create with their bodies and hand-held percussion instruments. This special concert will celebrate the Civil Rights Movement and its achievements. Tickets are $23, $20, $18 and $12. Pentagon will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, in the Mechanicsburg Middle School Auditorium, 1750 S. Market St., Mechanicsburg. The rock band is well-known for its musical shows that feature tunes from the 50’s through the 90’s. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for students. Two winter voice recitals, presented by students of Joan Boytim, will be held at 2 and 3:15 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, in the sanctuary of Allison United Methodist Church, Carlisle. The programs include a wide variety of music including folk, sacred, art songs, Broadway selections, and arias from oratorio and opera. The public is invited. Singing at 2 p.m., are the following students from grades 7-9: Madeline Schlusser, Christina Snyder, Gail Tierney, Kelly Smith, Megan Sunday, Emily Filburn, Kira Kaplan, Maura Manning, Tad Wright, Adrian Paskey, Gina Moscato and Curtis Scotto. Singing at 3:15 p.m. are the following students from grades 10-12: Liza Ebbets, Kait Williamson, Casey Burton, Joe Charette, Victoria Jumper, Becky Cerullo, Kevin Whitmire, Elise Manning, Amanda Jones, James Lang, Lauren Parrott, Melanie Merryman, Christina Kay and Todd Kilmer.
The Jacobs Brothers will appear at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at the Glenvale Church of God, 1970 New Valley Road, Marysville. The word “versatility” best describes the Jacobs Brothers program. Although they specialize in traditional and sacred music, their approach to the Gospel is varied by using the diversified talents of the singers throughout the concert. The Fuller Family Strings, a favorite local gospel and bluegrass group, will be the featured group at 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, at Ickesburg United Church of Christ’s monthly “Night of Music.” Rounding out the musical worship service will be the church choir and other favorite local musicians. The congregation will also be invited to sing along with some of the hymns. Following the program, everyone will have a chance to share fellowship and light refreshments. The event is free and open to the public. A freewill offering will be collected. The church is located at 85 Tuscarora Path, just west of the square of Ickesburg on PA Route 17. Acclaimed Serbian violinist Mikhail Simonyan will perform with pianist Alexei Podkorytov at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at The Forum, Fifth and Walnut streets, Harrisburg. Presented by The Wednesday Club, the program will include Grieg’s Violin Sonata No. 2 in G Major, Op. 13, Ravel’s “Tzigane,” and Tchaikovsky’s “Souvenir d’un lieu cher,” Op. 42. The APB Cultural Arts Committee at Shippensburg University presents Influences: The Motown Greats at 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, in the H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center. Four top emerging singer/songwriters, Bob Carroll, Chris Cauley, Chinua Hawk and Nadine Zahr, will showcase well-known and loved classics and favorites from artists like Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Smoky Robinson and Marvin Gaye. The Holly Inn, 31 S. Baltimore Ave., Mt. Holly Springs, is having a special celebration to celebrate Mayor Kirk Wilson’s birthday from 7-11 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19. Come join Mayor Wilson as celebrity bartender and the band 3 Drink Minimum from Washington, D.C., who will be playing swing, jazz and contemporary music throughout the night. Swing dance demonstrations will be provided by Matt Stewart, and birthday cake will be served. South Middleton School District’s annual “Band Night” concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, in Brenneman Auditorium at Boiling Springs High School. The Yellow Breeches sixth grade band, the Yellow Breeches seventh and eighth grade band and the Boiling Springs High School band will be performing. Lebanon Valley College music faculty members John Copenhaver and Dr. Christopher D. Campbell will present a College Recital featuring the Baroque trumpet at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, in the Blair Music Center. Copenhaver will perform the “Concerto in E-flat” by J.B.G. Neruda and Campbell will play the “Sonata prima” by Vivianni, “Concerto in D” by Torelli, and the “Vaga Cintia” by Scarlatti, accompanied by soprano D. Rebecca C. Lister. Campbell will play all his pieces on a Baroque trumpet, which is two times the length of a modern trumpet and has no valves to aid in changing notes. The recital will also feature Dr. Christopher J. Hefner, band director and music education professor, who will be performing with Copenhaver and Campbell in a piccolo trumpet trio by Telemann. Dr. Shelly Moorman-Stahlman, an associate professor of music at LVC, will accompany them on the organ. The recital is free and open to the public.
The Fault Line, the first singing group to take the leap into mainstream rock without the use of instruments, will appear at 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, in Leedy Theater of the Mund College Center, Lebanon Valley College. The four singers use their powerful voices to create spectacular harmonies and stunning arrangements based on music from groups such as Bill Haley & His Comets, The Used and Fall Out Boy. The CVSM Community Symphonic Band will hold its annual Winter Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, at the Chambersburg Area Senior High School Auditorium, 511 S. Sixth St., Chambersburg. Under the expert guidance of conductor, David Wenerd, the eclectic and challenging program includes “Mother Earth” by David Maslanka, “Il Bersagliere” by Eduardo Boccalari, “O Magnum Mysterium” by Morton Lauridsen, “Spoon River” by Percy Grainger and more. Admission to the concert is free, although donations are gratefully accepted.
