State House candidate Sheryl Delozier has received the support of former Gov. Mark Schweiker, a key endorsement in the competitive six-way race for the Republican nomination in the 88th Legislative District.

Schweiker was lieutenant governor under Tom Ridge from 1994 to 2001 and became governor when Ridge left to become President George W. Bush’s director of homeland security. Schweiker was succeeded in 2003 by current Gov. Ed Rendell and is now the president of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce.

He is the second high-profile Republican to endorse a candidate in the 88th district race.

Former congressman Pat Toomey, who nearly defeated Sen. Arlen Specter in 2004’s Republican primary, will speak at a fund-raiser for lawyer Lowell Gates on Monday.

William Cornell, Matthew Seagrist, Ian Hayes and Michael Hancock, are also running for the Republican nomination. They are all vying to replace Rep. Jerry Nailor, R-88, who is retiring after 20 years in office.

Delozier worked with Schweiker while she was the executive director of the IMPACCT Commission, an initiative created by Ridge to increase government efficiency.

“He was a great person to espouse the ideas” of reducing government spending, Delozier said. “We talk about lowering taxes, but in order to have less taxes we need to eventually lessen the cost of government.”

Schweiker will probably appear at a campaign event with Delozier in March, she said.

The county GOP committee declined to endorse any of the candidates in mid-January, citing the benefit of an open primary.

The 88th district comprises Lemoyne, Lower Allen, Upper Allen, New Cumberland, Shiresmantown, Mechanicsburg, Monroe and Wormleysburg’s 1st precinct.
