Chambersburg art exhibit features landscapes

“The Road Less Traveled” will feature artists Helen Leyh of Waynesboro and Teresa Uccellini of Mercersburg.

Working in watercolor, acrylic and oils, Helen Leyh interprets the landscapes around her — and makes up her own as well.

“My mother was an artist,” she says, “and I learned to paint in oils from her.” Leyh’s only lessons were in watercolor, many years ago in Cleveland, Ohio. Now 82, she is working on a 10-foot-long mural outside her Rouzerville home.

Teresa Uccellini specializes in watercolors of seaside scenes and flowers.

Originally inspired by James Buchanan High School art instructor John Burget, she has experimented with pottery, printmaking and sculpture as well as many two-dimensional media.

A Mercersburg resident, she has studied at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts with instructor Bob Wantz and is currently working on a two-story mural at the nearby Whitetail Ski Resort.

“The Road Less Traveled: Artists’ Journeys” will continue through March 29 at the Council for the Arts gallery at 159 S. Main St. in Chambersburg. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday (note new hours — the gallery is now closed Wednesdays).

Tree seedling sale

The Franklin County Conservation District is again holding its annual tree seedling sale.

The trees are grown at a state-certified nursery and will be sold in bundles of 25 per species. Orders will be taken through March 7.

The seedlings will be available around the middle of April and customers will be notified about the pick-up time and location.

The species vary in the height they will be when you get them, because some species grow faster than others. Most will be from 8 to 10 inches tall, but may be as much as 28 inches.

The trees for sale are Douglas fir, concolor fir, Fraser fir, Colorado blue spruce, Scotch pine, eastern white pine, Austrian pine, white oak, red maple and white flowering dogwood.

The cost for a bundle of 25 plants varies from $14 to $21, depending on the species.

Place an order by stopping at our office and picking up an order form and mailing it. You can also go to the Conservation District’s office at 100 Sunset Boulevard West, behind the Family Traditions Restaurant on Route 11 north in Chambersburg, and pick up an order form there.

The order form is also on the Web site at www.franklinccd.com. It will print on 8.5-by-14-inch (legal) paper.

This is a great offer if you have some land suitable for trees. Most building lots would be very crowded with trees if 25 fir trees were planted on it, but maybe you can get together with a neighbor and share a bundle.
