HERSHEY -- Many of the things that were expected to happen on Friday night in Hershey for the District 3-AAA wrestling championships did.

But a few local wrestlers managed to give the crowd some surprises leading into today’s 1 p.m. start.

The most suprising outcome might have been at 135 pounds, where Cumberland Valley’s Tom Weichelt took to the mat for the quarterfinals against Central York’s undefeated Zach Grove (31-0).

Weichelt battled Grove throughout the match and eventually took the lead 6-5 with thirty seconds remaining. From there it was thirty seconds of chaos as Weichelt clung to Grove and tried to prevent him from scoring, which he did successfully.

The Eagle wrestler hung on to Grove’s foot for the 6-5 victory and trip to the semifinals.

“I was thinking don’t let that foot go,” said the senior. “I really considered this my match to go to states, but the semis should be a good match.”

In the semis, Weichelt will meet a familiar face in Big Spring’s Luke Etter.

Etter, who split with Weichelt in their two matches this season, beat the fourth and fifth seeds in order to reach the semifinals. Etter first defeated Lower Dauphin’s Jason Kane. The Bulldog led 4-2 late in the match, but an escape and a stalling point knotted the match up and sent it into overtime.

In overtime, Etter was able to win with a successful shot for the 6-4 victory.

In the quarterfinals he met Lampeter Strasburg’s Ian McClune. Etter used a second-period escape and takedown to make the difference and set up his meeting with Weichelt.

“They were good wins tonight. Everyone was saying I couldn’t beat Kane,” said the Bulldog sophomore. “It definetly gave me some confidence.”

Also reaching the semifinals at 135 pounds was Carlisle’s standout freshman Jayshon Wilson, who racked up points in a first round technical fall and quarterfinal major decision.

Another major local surprise came at 160 pounds. Mechnicsburg junior Adam Tuttle finished third at sectionals a week earlier when he lost to Chambersburg’s Joe Wilmot. Now Tuttle will again be in the semis again today after two wins.

An overtime takedown led him over Conrad Weiser’s Adam Polynone 7-5. He avoided overtime in the following round when he put Manheim Township’s Cutter Recher on his back for the victory with 10 seconds remaining in regulation.

“I was just trying to hit my move,” said Tuttle. “I didn’t think I could get it with 10 seconds, but it worked.”

Waiting for Tuttle is Mike Evans of Cumberland Valley, who advanced easily through his two opponents.

At 103 pounds, Colton Keck of Big Spring advanced after a pin in the first round and a 6-0 victory in the second round over Lower Dauphin’s Calvin Wright. Keck will now face top ranked Clayton Youtz of Central Dauphin, who has defeated Keck twice on the season.

“He beat me 4-2 last time,” said Keck. “But I almost had him cradled.”

Cumberland Valley’s Bryce Busler and Joe Napoli both seem to be on a finals collision course with the Peppelman brothers of Central Dauphin.

CV’s Tristan Warner fell to CD’s Tony Dallago 4-3 at 152 pounds.

At the same weight Big Spring’s Mallie Shuster cruised to the semifinals on the strength of a first round pin and a 5-1 victory over Central York’s DJ Zarfos.

Shuster will face Reading’s Ricardo Pena today.

“It’s been a good tournament so far,” said Shuster. “I had two matches that went exactly how I thought they would tonight and hopefully I’ll get two more tomorrow.”

Cedar Cliff’s Tom Heckman advanced by beating Red Lion’s Keith Dahlheimer 3-2. Heckman will face off against Reading’s Giovanni Ortiz.

His Colt teammate Keith Dickey is looking to return to states this year and he put his best foot forward Friday with two victories as well.

Mechanicsburg has a semifinalist in Dan Estricher at 285. Estricher got a fall in the first round before getting a nice 5-2 victory over Hempfield’s Sean Sheehe in the quarters. He will now face CD East’s 31-0 Dan Nickoli in the semis. Estricher lost to Nickoli by one point earlier in the season.
