Carlisle School Board President Fred Baldwin said the “early bird” contract approved Thursday night by the board is a “reasonable contract for both sides.”

The three-year deal, which takes effect in 2009, will give salary increases of 4.25 percent, 4 percent and 4 percent each year. Health care premium sharing will start at 15 percent and rise to 16 percent and 16 and two-thirds percent.

The board approved the contract by a unanimous vote.

Each member of the union will receive, on average, a $200 check because of the contract.

Superintendent Mary Kay Durham said she appreciated the union’s efforts to get the contract done.

She added she thought it was “a very good settlement.”

The approval means CASD will avoid, at least for the next four years, a contract showdown between the board and teacher’s union like the one taking place in the Cumberland Valley School District.

“I think everyone is relieved we’re going to spend the next four years worrying about educating our students, which is our main goal,” Baldwin said. “As distinct from caring about contract minutia.”
