District 3-AA Swimming: Gingrich, Kinsey earn gold
Images
Leah Gingrich sings while she swims.
She won’t tell you anything specific about what or who she sings, but she does play an apparent catalog of songs in her head while she cuts through the water.
Whatever the East Pennsboro swimmer was singing at Saturday’s District 3-AA swim championships, it worked. The senior literally had about a pool’s length lead on her closest competitor in the 500 free.
And to a standing ovation, Gingrich crushed her old D3-AA record time in the endurance event by more than eight seconds with her time of 4:46.64 — her previous meet record was 4:56.94, set in 2006.
Gingrich was one of two Sentinel-area swimmers to win district gold Saturday, as Trinity’s Steph Kinsey won the 100 back for the second consecutive year and the Shamrock girls finished second in the team standings to Muhlenberg, the team’s 11th team win since 1993.
Hershey took home the boys’ team title.
“I was able to see my times while I was swimming, so I was checking on that, but I sing too,” said Gingrich, referring to what she thinks about while swimming. “It’s exciting to hear everyone cheering for you. I wanted to get a record today, especially after (Friday) when I missed out on breaking one (in the 200 IM). I swam the 500 free at states two years ago a second faster, so today still wasn’t my fastest time.”
Gingrich’s record time came after waking up at 6 a.m. to get in an early practice before the second day of the competition.
“I swam about 7,000 (yards) today. So about two hours,” she said. “When I really started dedicating time to swimming and getting up every morning to swim, that’s when I saw my times start to drop.”
And while Gingrich accepted her win for the 500, Kinsey was preparing for her victory in the 100 back, along with teammate Adrienne Phillips, who went on to finish second.
“Well I was really nervous,” said Kinsey, who swam a 58.83. “I won it last year so there was pressure on me to win again. Plus, I was swimming against Adrienne, who’s been my best friend for 10 years. I wanted to win, but I knew to do that, I’d have to beat her.”
Phillips came in right behind Kinsey with a time of 1:01.79. She was followed by James Buchanan’s Rachel Reeder and Millersburg’s Kasey Travitz. Reeder and Travitz tied for third with a time of 1:01.79 and later were forced to have a swim-off to determine which swimmer received the automatic bid to the PIAA meet, which was won by Reeder.
Phillips finished in third in the 500 free, and joined Kinsey, Kim Jerzerick and Brittany Neifert in placing second in the 400 free.
Kinsey just narrowly missed out on completing a comeback against Muhlenberg in the final leg.
Muhlenberg finished in 3:37.44. Trinity was 3:37.64.
“I honestly didn’t think I would be able to catch up when I dove in the water,” said Kinsey. “We really wanted to win going in, but we were pleased with beating York Suburban. Our coach told us this morning that we were close behind them.”
Trinity did creep into the Top 3 for the boys when David Shedleski touched the wall third in the 100 breast with a time of 1:01.85. Hershey’s David Nolan won the race at 58.67, but Shedleski continued to cut his time and approach his goal to go under a minute.
“I think I can do it,” said Shedleski. “I have been practicing hard and I’m looking forward to swimming at states. I think I need to work on my flip turns and my underwater pulls if I want to get faster.”
The Boiling Springs boys’ 400 free relay team also cracked the Top 8 by placing seventh with a score of 3:26.20. The Bubblers’ Eddie LaNoue went on to finish 11th in the 100 free with a time of 49.34.
Notes: Big Spring’s Emily Shumaker was ninth in the 100 back, while Trinity’s Noelle Hoffer placed sixth... Boiling Springs’ Ben Jumper finished the 100 back in 17th place with a time of 1:00.65... Big Spring’s Sierra Beecher was 14th in the 100 breast... Big Spring’s Sean Garrity placed 15th in the 100 breast.
