College Softball: Lady Raiders open season 3-2
SALISBURY, N.C. — The Shippensburg University womens’ softball team opened its season with three wins and two losses at the Catawba College Invitational over the weekend.
The Lady Raiders started the season with a bang, pounding out 16 hits in a 9-1 victory over Wheeling Jesuit on Friday. Ship got good plate efforts from Amanda Bardo (3 for 3, home run, 2 RBI), Hope Cornell (2 for 4, home run, 3 RBI), Lori Knopf (3 for 3, 2 runs) and Liz Good (2 for 3).
Ship starter Dani Shields fired a three-hitter and struck out seven.
Later on Friday, the Lady Raiders finished on the other side of a blowout, falling 8-0 to Coker College.
Ship could not find an answer to Cobra pitcher Shelly Catlett, who stifled the Lady Raiders for four hits while striking out five.
Shippensburg got back to work on Saturday and nearly pulled off a victory over Georgia College & State, ranked No. 23 in Division II, but fell 7-3 after the Bobcats rallied for victory.
Knopf pitched for the Lady Raiders and had allowed just one run on four hits through six innings when she struck out the first batter of the seventh. However, the batter reached base on a passed ball, setting the stage for a Bobcat comeback.
Four singles and a walk later, Georgia College & State was ahead 5-3. The Bobcats finished the inning, and the Lady Raiders, with two unearned runs.
Knopf was once again thrown into the fire in Shippensburg’s second game of the day against Indianapolis. This time, the junior induced a bases-loaded pop-up with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the seventh inning to earn a save and help her team earn a 6-3 victory over the Greyhounds.
Knopf also had a strong day with the bat, going 3 for 3 with an RBI in the contest.
Shippensburg finished its weekend with a 10-3 spanking of Belmont Abbey. The Lady Raiders cranked out 15 hits, including four doubles. Ship freshman Courtney Steele (4 for 4, 2 runs, 2 RBI, home run) and Lisamarie Ramagli (2 for 3, 1 run, RBI) led the Lady Raiders offensive attack.
Shippensburg will travels to Kissimmee, Fla. during Spring Break, where it will play 13 games in six days. They will begin the trip with a doubleheader against Queens (N.Y.) on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
