Outdoors: Lots of shows to attend
Oops! I guess I didn’t look into the senior lifetime fishing license because a fellow called the paper and told us I could have bought my license at the county courthouse. When I contacted the Cumberland County Courthouse Treasurer’s office, I discovered that, sure enough, I could have saved 40 miles of driving by driving to Carlisle instead of Harrisburg. So, when your 65th birthday arrives, you can purchase your senior lifetime license from a county treasurer for the year you actually turn 65. You don’t have to wait for you actual birthday before purchasing one.
I chatted with a Terrance on Saturday, the last day of flintlock and archery deer season. He’d been out in the morning but hadn’t seen anything, so he planned to head to the Yellow Breeches, where he told me the Yellow Breeches Angler’s stocked a lot of trout throughout the whole length of the stream from below Huntsdale to below Boiling springs. He said they put 10,000 fish in last week but he wasn’t actually sure of the exact number.
If you have cabin fever and can separate yourself from the football games, you might want to dust off a fishing rod, buy a 2008 fishing license, gather up any youngsters wasting their time playing games on their computer and head for the stream. Remember this: during the second season, trout may be killed for the skillet, but instead of five as in the regular season, the limit is now three.
If you’re getting a slight twinge of cabin fever, or as they say in the Rockies, the shack nasties, you might want to gather your fly fishing buddies and head for the largest fly fishing show in the country over in Somerset, N.J., beginning Jan. 25 until Sunday, the 27th.
It’s about a three-hour drive from here and if you’d like more information, contact Barry Serviente at 245-2256. Barry has been promoting the show for more years than I can remember and can give you all the details.
I like the show because it’s small and friendly and in one day, you can see everything and still get to all of seminars and demonstrations.
The largest outdoor show in the country begins Feb. 2 through Feb. 10. It’s held at the State Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg and this will be either their 53rd or 54th year.
Its always so crowded, but somehow, even if I promise myself I won’t go this year, I probably still will. The easiest way to find out all about the show is to go online at www.easternsportshow.com. It should give the opening times along with times and dates for all seminars and attractions. You might also check out the online ticket discounts and learn about the free parking Bass Pro Shops offers at their parking lot with shuttle buses to the show.
