College Baseball: Raiders win home opener
There’s no place like home.
Saturday was quite a happy homecoming for Shippensburg native Rick Shumway, who played on Shippensburg University’s Art Fairchild Field for the first time as a Red Raider baseball player.
Shumway started at third base in both games of his team’s doubleheader against Bloomsburg and went a combined 3 for 5 while also drilling his first career home run. Shumway and the Raiders swept the Huskies by scores of 13-0 and 1-0.
Shumway, a sophomore, completed his Saturday afternoon by smiling and autographing a young boy’s baseball.
“It’s good to be home,” Shumway said. “I’m comfortable here and I feel good here, Shippensburg is a nice fit for me.”
All of the Raiders (11-9), winners of 10 of their last 12, seem to be comfortable back at home after opening their season in Florida.
“Our bats have come alive and our pitching has settled down,” Ship coach Matt Jones said. “We’re playing consistently well right now.”
Ship 13, Bloomsburg 0
Hard-throwing left-hander Matt Wright put on a show for the home crowd, fanning 10 and allowing just a pair of hits to the Huskies (3-13).
“Wright is a draftable player,” Jones said. “He’s the best player in the region and anytime he’s out there, you expect him to win.”
Wright didn’t need much help to defeat Bloomsburg, but his offense gave him plenty of assistance anyway.
The Raiders, keyed by a bases-clearing double from junior catcher Sean Killian (2 for 3, 2 runs, 4 RBIs), exploded for six runs in the bottom of the second inning.
“Killian has a strong arm and does a good job behind the plate,” Jones said. “Sometimes you look down at the boxscore and don’t realize just how much he is helping the team.”
Wright added, “After we scored those six runs, it made pitching a lot easier for me. It was a huge relief.”
The runs didn’t stop there, Ship posted three more runs in the bottom of the third inning before Shumway, known more for his speed than his power, blasted a solo home run over the leftfield fence in the fourth inning. Shumway’s home run made the score 10-0.
“Power is a new addition for me,” Shumway said. “I’ve been doing some offseason weight training.”
The Raiders capped off the day’s scoring with a three-run sixth inning, which saw RBI hits from Ashton Taughinbaugh and Kyle Rhoades (2 for 4, 2 doubles, 3 RBIs).
Saturday’s opener was a good game for the Ship offense, which pounded out 14 hits and got solid games out of Justin Garber (2 for 5), Shumway and Rhoades, as well as a slew of other Raiders who registered hits.
Ship 1, Bloomsburg 0
Shippensburg southpaw pitcher Tim Freshour has had plenty of support from his offense so far this season, with his teammates outscoring the opposition 51-10 in four games he won.
Going for his fifth win on Saturday, Freshour gutted this one out himself, firing a four-hit shutout while striking out six to improve his record to 5-1.
Jones said, “We got our money’s worth out of Freshour.”
Freshour pitched well enough to strand eight Bloomsburg runners while his offense put him in the win column with an RBI-single from Kasey Kuhns in the bottom of the fourth.

Tampa 10, Ship 2
Shippensburg scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning and couldn’t find an answer for the rest of the game against Tampa (20-4-1), the No. 7-ranked team in Division II baseball.
The Raiders were held to five hits against Tampa’s pitching trio of Daniel Keefe, Rick Hudson and Pat House.
Shippensburg’s Kevin Scholly was the only Raider to manage a multiple-hit game, going 2 for 4 with a double.
Jones said, “We have one of the toughest schedules in the country.”
