KISSIMMEE, Fla. — It was an up-and-down weekend for the Shippensburg University Lady Raider softball team.

Ship opened the weekend with a pair of strong wins over Queens (N.Y.) before dropping four of its next five.

The Lady Raiders (6-6) faced Queens on Friday and won the first game 10-2 and the second game 14-0.

Shippensburg came back for victory in Friday’s first game.

Down 1-0 with one out in the bottom of the first inning, seven straight Shippensburg batters reached base safely (4 walks, 3 hits) to give the Lady Raiders a not-to-be surmounted 5-1 lead.

The offense continued to click in Friday’s nightcap, with the Lady Raiders cranking out 17 hits and getting a strong pitching outing from freshman Dana Ward, who allowed just four hits and struck out five.

Once again, Ship started out strong, clubbing six runs across the plate in the first inning, with Shippensburg native Chelsea Carson finishing the damage with a two-RBI double.

Lori Knopf highlighted the Lady Raiders’ fantastic Friday by going a combined 6 for 7.

Saturday was a different story, as Shippensburg scored a combined four runs in three losses.

The Lady Raiders had a tough time hitting Gannon’s Laura Soldner (5 hits, 5 strikeouts) in Saturday’s 6-1 loss before getting no-hit by Wayne State’s Molly Yetman (14 strikeouts) in a 4-0 setback.

Ship ended Saturday with a 6-3 loss to Bentley. The Lady Raiders led 3-0 after the first inning, but couldn’t hold on to its lead as the Falcons posted six unanswered runs.

On Sunday, Shippensburg got a quality 2-0 win over Ferris State, ranked No. 25 in Division II softball, before falling 3-1 to Indianapolis.

The victory over Ferris State featured a pitcher’s duel between the Lady Raiders’ Dani Shields (3 hits, 3 strikeouts, 3 walks) and the Bulldogs’ Kayle Stevenson (4 hits, 7 strikeouts, 3 walks).

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Ship’s Rachelle Wedell punched a two-RBI single up the middle to give the Lady Raiders victory.

Indianapolis avenged an early-season loss to Shippensburg by beating them on Sunday.

Ward, Ship’s starter, kept the Lady Raiders in the game by allowing just three runs off eight hits, but Ship’s offense couldn’t come back against the Greyhounds’ Amanda Wendlinger, who allowed just one run and five hits over six innings.

The Lady Raiders returned to action yesterday with games against Upper Iowa and Minnesota State-Mankato. Results were unavailable at Monday night’s press deadline.
