College Baseball: Raiders capture first win
ANDERSON, S.C. — Shippensburg earned its first win of the season on Saturday after winning the second game of its doubleheader against Anderson, 14-4.
The victory was sandwiched between a pair of losses — the Raiders fell 4-3 in Saturday’s opener and lost 5-2 on Sunday afternoon.
Shippensburg turned 12 hits and six Anderson errors into a season-high 14 runs in Saturday’s victory.
The Raiders (1-6) raced out to a 10-0 lead after three innings and got big hitting efforts from Ship high school grad Rick Shumway (2-for-4, 3 runs, RBI), Kevin Scholly (2-for-4, 2 RBIs), Kevin Miller (2-for-4, RBI) and Justin Garber (2-for-6, 2 RBIs).
Tim Freshour earned the complete-game victory, scattering nine hits for four runs (two earned) while registering five strikeouts.
The Trojans (5-13), however, owned the weekend, getting a pair of come-from-behind wins.
Ship started off strong enough on Saturday, jumping ahead 3-0 on an RBI single from Tyler Redick (2-for-4, RBI), a Scholly sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout from Kasey Kuhns.
That shutout remained intact until the sixth inning, when Anderson scored four runs with two outs and a runner on first; Ship ace Matt Wright (10 strikeouts) surrendered four hits in the inning, including a triple, while also hitting a batter — the Trojans had the lead and the Raiders never recovered.
Sunday’s game was another tough loss for Shippensburg.
The Raiders overcame a 1-0 deficit by scoring on a Miller RBI triple in the fourth and an RBI groundout from Redick in the fifth inning to ahead 2-1.
But Anderson battled right back in the seventh, taking advantage of a wild pitch and an error to score two runs to reclaim a 3-2 lead. The Trojans got two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth and held on for victory.
Top hitters for Ship on Sunday were Kyle Rhoades (3-for-4) and Garber (2-for-4, run).
The Raiders play Georgia College & State on Saturday and Sunday for a three-game series. Games will be played at 1 and 4 p.m. on Saturday and 12 p.m. on Sunday.
