Northern squeaks by Shippensburg in 10 innings

Sam Crater knocked in Jake Warner from third with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to lead Northern past visiting Shippensburg, 1-0.

The result wasted Ricky Ott’s outing. The senior struck out 13 over seven innings of work but Cam Richardson, who tossed nine innings of three-hit ball kept the Greyhounds off the scoreboard.

Crater also stepped up on the mound and pitched a perfect 10th inning to earn the win.

Crater, with two hits, was the only player for either team with multiple hits.

Commonwealth

Carlisle 5, Cedar Cliff 3

Derrick Mease collected two RBIs and Sinjin Martin hit a solo home run in the first inning to lift Carlisle past Cedar Cliff, 5-3, at George Bowen Field.

Freshman Eric Dukes went 4-for-4 to pace the Thundering Herd (2-5, 1-1).

Dylan Zigman went 2-for-4 and Mike Lebo hit a home run for Cedar Cliff (5-2, 0-2).

Red Land 5, Central Dauphin East 4 (8)

Kyle Otstot went 2-for-4 with two doubles and Tyler McKim added a solo home run to lead visiting Red Land past Central Dauphin East, 5-4, in eight innings.

Carl Sheaffer hit a triple and K.C. Beshore pitched 2 2/3 perfect innings with five strikeouts for the win in relief of Otstot, who allowed four earned runs and struck out four.

Keystone

Mechanicsburg 7, Hershey 6


Matt Morell’s two-run single to left field with one out in the top of the seventh brought home Ryan Mentzer and Sam Burkholder to give Mechanicsburg a thrilling 7-6 win over Hershey at Memorial Field.

A Hershey error put Mentzer on first before Burkholder and Jimmy Spanos singled to load the bases.

Ben Anderson collected a solo home run for the Wildcats (2-4, 1-2).

Colonial

East Pennsboro 9, Susquenita 3


Max Miller went 2-for-4 and Shawn Myers picked up three RBIs to lead visiting East Pennsboro past Susquenita, 9-3.

Zach Swartz scattered seven hits with seven strikeouts for the win.

Mike Magaro went 2-for-3 for the Blackhawks.

Waynesboro 9, Big Spring 2

A seven-run fourth inning pushed Waynesboro past visiting Big Spring, 9-2.

Tyler Carns went 3-for-3 with a solo home run in the sixth inning and scored both of the Bulldogs’ runs.

The Indians collected six extra-base hits — four doubles — in the win.

Brenton Kopelek went 3-for-4 with a double and triple.

Capital

Trinity 17, Steelton-Highspire 1 (4)


Ted Spinelli hit for the cycle, finished 4-for-4 with four runs scored and four collected four RBIs to lead visiting Trinity in a 17-1 rout of Steelton-Highspire.

Brooks Watts went 3-for-4 and scored three times for the Shamrocks, who picked up their first win in five outings.

Travis Stoey added a home run for Trinity.

James Buchanan 4, Camp Hill 0

Matt Spiegel struck out 11 but surrendered four runs — two earned — as visiting James Buchanan blanked Camp Hill, 4-0.

Josh McCauley struck out 15 in a complete-game one-hitter for the Rockets, who stayed perfect in the division (3-0).

Spiegel’s single was the only hit for the Lions.

Boiling Springs 5, Milton Hershey 1

A.M. Beam threw a complete-game one-hitter with 10 strikeouts as visiting Boiling Springs downed Milton Hershey 5-1.

Mike Myers and Ben Fry collected two RBIs each.

Cumberland Valley 4, Wilson West Lawn 3


Kyle Wilhem went 2-for-4, scored a run and knocked one in to lead visiting Cumberland Valley to a 4-3 win over Wilson West Lawn.

The Eagles swept the two-game season series with the win.

Kevin Robertson, who tossed 2 1/3 innings with one strikeout and one hit, picked up the win on the mound for CV.

Carson Long 3, Bible Baptist 2

A two-run sixth inning led visiting Carson Long to a close 3-2 win over Bible Baptist.

Charlie Fitzpatrick and Nick Brinson collected the win hits for the Bobcats.

On the mound, Brinson struck out a game-high six.

Softball

West Perry 2, Cumberland Valley 0


Quinn Reisinger hit a two-run home run to left field with one out in the bottom of the seventh to lift West Perry to a 2-0 win over visiting Cumberland Valley.

Chara Dixon, who collected a double earlier, led off the seventh with a walk but Melissa Grafmyer hit into a fielders’ choice for one out. That’s when Reisinger stepped up for the walk-off win.

In the top of the seventh CV loaded the bases with one out but Alex Miller struck out and Kathryn Gilbert flew out to center, ending the threat.

Reisinger added to her heroics by tossing a complete-game with nine strike outs and one walk.

Kaitlin Darhower and Karina Bolster hit doubles for the Eagles.

Boiling Springs 12, Milton Hershey 2 (5)

Savannah Knepper, Lindsay Darchicourt, Felicia Eads, Grace Murtoff and Megan Cline collected 10 of Boiling Springs’ 13 hits as the Bubblers pounded visiting Milton Hershey, 12-2, in five innings.

Knepper and Bree Farrance each ripped doubles for the Bubblers, who rode Kristy Wallace’s four strong innings in the circle. Wallace struck out five and walked one.

Red Land 11, Central Dauphin East 1 (6)

Liz Christiansen went 2-for-3 with a double and triple to lead Red Land to an 11-1, six-inning rout of visiting Central Dauphin East in Mid-Penn Commonwealth action.

Alex Boyd tossed a complete-game three-hitter with six strikeouts and zero walks for the Patriots.

Jess Litten scored two runs and went 3-for-5 with a triple to pace Red Land.

Hershey 13, Mechanicsburg 12

Kaitlin Smith went 3-for-3, scored four runs and knocked in another but Mechanicsburg lost to Hershey, 13-12.

The Trojans scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to upend the Wildcats.

Abby Sido went 4-for-5 to pace Hershey.

Waynesboro 11, Big Spring 0

Jess Beecher collected Big Spring’s only hit as Waynesboro cruised to an 11-0 win.

Taryn Ashway tossed the one-hitter with 12 strikeouts and one walk.

Kayla Shoap struck out five but suffered the loss.

East Pennsboro 7, Susquenita 2

East Pennsboro’s Becca Garlinger recorded three RBIs and a triple in a 2-for-3 day against Susquenita. The Panthers won 7-2. Lindsay Murray went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for East Penn. Shauna Deschenes went 2-for-4 and scored two runs for the Blackhawks in the loss. Ashley Marsh was the winning pitcher with four strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Trinity JV 15, Steel-High Varsity 0

Trinity’s JV squad took on Steel-High’s varsity team and won 15-0.

Meghan Elliott threw four innings, giving up three hits and striking out 10.

Allie Stabile went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Kelly Decker went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Emily Miceli was 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Bryann MaGuire was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

James Buchanan 14, Camp Hill 1

James Buchanan ended its game with Camp Hill in five innings thanks to a 14-1 lead.

The Lions scored first thanks to a Jamie Mowery triple. Courtney Hope knocked in Mowery.

Girls’ Soccer

Trinity 8, Susquenita 0


Katie Linz and Alicia Mirando scored two goals as Trinity rolled by Susquenita, 8-0.

Chelsea Doub added two assists and Heather Schultz recorded one save for the shutout.

Rachel Holt, Allison Insley, Nichole Mahaffey and CAroline Ruminski added the other goals for Trinity (5-1-1).

The Shamrocks meet Bishop McDevitt on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at City Island.

Cumberland Valley 2, Cedar Cliff 0

Cumberland Valley blanked rival Cedar Ciff 2-0 Tuesday in girls’ soccer action.

Leading the way was Kelly Pizzingrilli, who scored both goals for the Eagles -- one in each half. Both goals came with help from Helena Tinnyo.

The Colts posted eight shots in the game, but couldn’t find the back of the net.

Boiling Springs 2, Big Spring 1 (OT)

Boiling Springs improved to 4-3 on the season thanks to the overtime win Tuesday over rival Big Spring.

The Bubblers’ Summer Wert put one in the net in overtime for the 2-1 victory. Megan Beck scored Boiling Springs’ first goal. Big Sprin tied it up thanks to Tess Arbegast on an assist from Hailey Brandt.

Waynesboro 4, Shippensburg 3

Shippensburg answered Waynesboro’s early goals and even took the lead in the second half, but eventually lost in overtime 4-3 to the Maidens.

Michelle Sanders scored two goals for Waynesboro and Margaret Weber scored the game winner. For Ship, Rachel Brubaker scored and Jess Shoap put two in. Ship falls to 5-2-1 on the season.

East Pennsboro 1, Bishop McDevitt 0

East Pennsboro improved to 5-1-1 on the season by edging Bishop McDevitt 1-0 Tuesday.

Meghan Hammaker took a Sam Toth assist to goal for the game’s only score, which came in the second half. The Panthers put up 16 shots to McDevitt’s five.

Bible Baptist 3, Lancaster Catholic 0

Bible Baptist 3 blanked Lancaster Catholic 3-0 Tuesday. Zoe Martins registered the hat trick, scoring all three goals for the Bobcats.

Bible Baptist’s Jess Trostle collected 15 saves in goal.

Boys’ Tennis

Northern 6, Bishop McDevitt 1


B.J. Bush beat Steve Rozman 6-2, 6-2 in No. 1 singles action to lead Northern past Bishop McDevitt 6-1.

Other singles winners for the Polar Bears included Sam Calabria over Pat Gregorits 6-2, 6-0; Jared Meyer’s 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Kevin Ellison and Derrick Root’s 6-1, 6-1 clinic over Dan Graham.

McDevitt’s Devin Bolton beat Grant Cole 6-3, 6-4.

The Bears swept doubles as Bush/Cole beat Rozman/Bolton 8-6 and Calabria/Kyle Schwille beat Gregorits/Ellison 8-3.

Mechanicsburg 6, Palmyra 1

Via a sweep in singles action, Mechanicsburg rolled to a 6-1 win over Palmyra.

Scott Bronder knocked off Roger VanScyoc 6-4, 6-3 in No. 1 singles. Other Mechanicsburg winners were Tyler Matisse, who beat Andy Rosborough 6-1, 6-4; Shane Jordan’s 6-1, 6-3 win over Kyle Kahl and Tyler Miller, who won by default.

In doubles action, Wildcat winners were Bronder/Matisse over VanScyoc/Rosborough 8-4 and Lee Kennedy-Shaffer/Kevin Clancy over Clinton Stoltzfus/Zach Wakefield 6-4, 6-4.

Palmyra’s Shayne Dement/Ryan Bratton beat Evan Singer/Rob Staiger 6-3, 7-5.

East Pennsboro 4, Camp Hill 3

East Pennsboro boys downed Camp Hill 4-3 in tennis.

The Lions’ Dillion Golden did win in No. 1 singles against Andrew Deckert 6-4, 6-1. But the Panthers won three of the next four singles matches. Brice Morey won 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 over John Cummings. Marc Wagner downed Andrew Green 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Camp Hill’s Casey MaCoy defeated Dante Ngo 6-1, 6-2. The Panthers’ Andrew Chan won 6-2, 6-1 over Taylor Berrin.

In doubles, Camp Hill’s Golded and McCoy won 6-2, 6-2 over Deckert and Ngo. But East Penn’s Wagner and Chan won 6-1, 6-3 over Cummings and Green in No. 2 doubles.

Trinity 5, Middletown 2

Trinity defeated Middletown 5-2 Tuesday.

Nick Shadowen won as usual with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Dan Kapenstein in No. 1 singles. Andy Stokes also won 6-0, 6-0 over Zach Crumlich. Middletown’s Jake Romberger downed Trinity 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. Trevor Bower also won for the Blue Raiders, beating Elliot Fry 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Mike Diminick won for the Shamrocks 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles, Shadowen and Stokes defeated Kapenstein and Crumlich 6-0, 6-1. Fry and Diminick won 8-2 over Bower and Breon.

Trinity improves to 4-2 overall.

Harrisburg Academy 7, York Country Day 0

Harrisburg Academy boys’ tennis improved to 5-0 on the season with 7-0 win over York Country Day Tuesday.

Andrew Kantor defeated Brad Schaefer 6-1, 6-2, while Doug Caplan won 6-1, 6-0 over Lin Robinson. Andrew Jagannath defeated Joe Gross 6-2, 6-0. Ted Otto won 6-0, 6-0 over Mitch Stover and Dan Montchal won 6-2, 6-1 over Alex Keller.

In doubles, Kantor and Caplin downed Schaefer and Gross 6-1, 6-0, while Jagannath and Otto won over Stover and Keller 8-0.

Cedar Cliff 5, Central Dauphin East 2

Cedar Cliff defeated C.D. East 5-2 Tuesday. Matt Miller defeated Jeff Nguyen 6-3, 4-6, 7-6. Kevin Ortenzio beat out Kevin Marrs 6-2, 6-2. Wade Caldwell won 6-3, 6-0. In doubles, Joey Fortenbaugh and Ortenzio fell to Jeff Nguyen and Diego Munoz 8-3. Chris Wright and Tom Teson won 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 and Brady Alford and Andrew Rearick won 6-2, 6-1.

James Buchanan 5, Susquenita 2

Susquenita fell at the hands of James Buchanan in boys tennis.

Devin Eckstine lost in No. 1 singles 6-3, 1-6, 2-6, while Seth Gilbert fell in No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 1-6. Ryan Lum got the win in No. 3 singles 7-5, 6-4, but Jason Cornell and Tyler Funk lost 4-6, 7-5, 2-6 and 1-6, 2-6 respectively.

In doubles, Eckstine and Gilbert fell in No. 1 doubles 4-8, while Jon Schardt and Steve Davidson won 8-5.

Boys’ Volleyball

Carlisle 3, Central Dauphin 1


Kyle Adams collected 16 kills, three blocks, two aces and nine digs to help power Carlisle to a 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 20-25, 25-21) win over Central Dauphin.

Justin Beachy had 28 digs while Dan Hoy contributed nine kills and four blocks.

Ed Benish had 38 assist, seven digs and four kills.

Red Land 3, Hershey 1

Red Land downed Hershey 3-1 in boys volleyball Tuesday night.

Game scores were 25-15, 27-29, 25-21, 25-18. Nick Turko recorded 23 kills for the Patriots, while Colin Keefer had 24 assists and nine digs.

Cedar Cliff 3, Chambersburg 0

Cedar Cliff blanked Chambersburg 3-0 in boys volleyball with scores of 25-20, 25-23, and 25-10. Nibbelink and Reisinger each had five kills, while Mettler had three blocks.

Track and Field

Central Dauphin boys 87, Carlisle 63

Central Dauphin girls 78, Carlisle 72


Carlisle dropped a dual meet to Central Dauphin at Landis Field in Colonial Park. The boys lost 87-63 while the girls were just short at 78-72.

The sprint speed of the Rams and their ability to get the extra points was the determining factor as they were able to sweep two events and took first and second in two other events to pile up a lead that they would not let go of. Some of the highlights for the Herd were Tyler Shimandle’s 400 victory and Joe Williams victory in the 800 and Kyle Hurston’s end to end run in the 3200 to cross the tape in 9:48.

Christian Perry in the triple jump and Travis Baughman in the shot were the other Herd winners.

A Central Dauphin highlight was Justin Shirk’s bomb throw of 203-4 in the javelin.

Ashley Corum and Mary Higgins were keys for the lady Herd as Corum won three events- the long and triple jumps and the 300 hurdles. Higgins won the 800 and the 3,200 and finished second to teammate Colleen Smith in the mile race. Arielle Williamson won the javelin and Taylor Hair won her first event of the season with a 4-8 jump in the high jump.

Central Dauphin swept three events which proved to be the difference in the meet. They swept the 100 hurdles, the 200 and the 400 races.

Ram soccer player Janessa Pope won three events and Tanisha Green had a hand in three victories.

Both Carlisle teams are 0-3 and head to Harrisburg next Tuesday for their next Commonwealth Division meet.

Susquenita boys 89, Camp Hill 61

Camp Hill girls 89, Susquenita 61


Camp Hill and Susquenita split their track meet with the Blackhawk boys winning 89-61, while the Lion girls won 89-61.

Nick Velgos won the 200, 300 hurdles, and triple jump for Susquenita, while Zach Dicks on the 3,200 and high jump.

Big Spring boys 97, East Pennsboro 53

Big Spring girls 87, East Pennsboro 59


Big Spring swept East Pennsboro Tuesday on the track.

The Bulldog boys won 97-53, while the girls won 87-59. Austin Stover won the 200, and was also part of the winning 1,600 relay. Sam Heberlig won the girls high jump for the Bulldogs.

Boiling Springs boys 98, Scotland 52

Boiling Springs girls 110, Scotland 27


Boiling Springs swept Scotland in track and field Tuesday.

The Bubbler girls won 110-27, while the boys won 98-52. Kara Millhouse won the 400 and 3,200. Elizabeth Hanniford won the 300 hurdles. Andrew Line won the 1,600 for the boys, while Greg Derk won the 3,200.

Waynesboro boys 91, Shippensburg 51

Waynesboro girls 82, Shippensburg 68


Shippensburg boys and girls fell to Waynesboro. The boys fell 91-51, while the girls fell 82-68.

Emily Brenneman won the 400 and was part of the 1,600 relay winning team. For the boys, Stephen Schelander won the 3,200 and was part of the 1,600 relay winning team.

Northern boys 120.33, Middletown 29.66

Northern girls 129, Middletown 21


Northern boys and girls pounded Middletown track Tuesday.

Kristin Taylor the 3,200, Rachel Wong won the 400, and Katie Meck won the 1,600 for the girls. Robbie Bleiler won the high jump and Steve McCown won the pole vault.
