If you thought an all-ages venue was just for kids, think again. The Championship in Lemoyne offers up some of the best in independent music for everyone who likes it live, with wide range of genres and special events that makes it one of the area’s premier spots for any rock lover.

Tonight, Cupid takes over the crowd with the Valentine’s in April event featuring a kissing booth, card exchange, and candy for both lovers and lonely-hearts looking for a do-over of February’s festivities. There are no fewer than six bands on the bill, including Safari So Good, Mourning District, Indica, Dance Hall Hero, A Push For Perfection, and Cloverleaf.

Tickets are a value at $8 and doors open at 5:30. Some lucky person will even walk away a winner, with a chance to win a dinner and bowling date at the coliseum with Jeff and Dan of Safari So Good spicing up the evening’s offering.

For the less romantic-minded, come back on Saturday, April 12, for a less frilly night of pure music with another full schedule of music onstage. Shattered Realm, Strength For A Reason, Wisdom In Chains, Steel Nation, Nature Of The Beast, and Not Without Resistance are the acts performing for the date-night show, which starts at 6:30pm for a $10 admission fee.

Whether you’re reliving your youth or rolling retro, Friday, April 18, is all about the big 80s with a themed dance party. So pull out the Aquanet and the acid-washed denim and you’ll be treated to a discounted admission of $3. The sad souls who enter without a costume will still be admitted for a $5 cover, but they’ll be missing out on a rare ridicule-free opportunity to sport those sexy parachute pants in public. The party starts at 8 p.m.

The rest of April and May continues with Championship’s typical whirlwind of bands both known and soon-to-be noticed, so be sure to check out the website for a complete schedule and updates. Highlights include the Youngblood Showcase ’08 on Saturday, May 3, when Iron Age, Set to Explode, Lion of Judah, and Mind Eraser among others are set to appear. Fired Up will also be on hand with an anticipated record release for those looking to expand their library of new music.

And speaking of buying music, for the shoppers out there, don’t miss the Punk Rock Flea Market on Saturday, May 31. Kick off your summer with this treasure trove of records, merchandise, Posters, toys, collectibles, furniture, and as they so delicately describe it, “Everything else your mom won’t let you keep at her house anymore.”

There’s still space for sellers at $10 a slot, $15 with a table. Check out the Web site for sign-up info.

But if you can’t make it in May, there is always the on-site record store featuring primarily punk, hardcore, emo and indie rock CDs and records. The selection is wide and the staff is notably knowledgeable, so don’t be shy about asking for special orders. The store is open on nights when there is a show, but if you there to peruse it’s OK not to participate. Talk to the doorman and they’ll let you through to the store without paying the ticket price.

No matter what your age or your reason for visiting, Championship is a one-stop destination for independent music not to be missed. For the music-minded, it’s well worth the extra effort to find their slightly-off-the-path location near the Market Street Bridge in Lemoyne.
