Perry County wants youth dairy promoters
The Perry County Dairy Promotion Committee is seeking youth ages 6-24 to help in the promotion of milk.
Girls ages 16-24 can vie for the title of Perry County Dairy Princess.
Girls or boys aged 14 and 15 can serve as a dairy ambassador, while girls 12 and 13 can serve as a dairy maid. Also, girls ages 9-11 can serve as a dairy miss, while girls ages 6-8 can serve as a li’l dairy miss.
The age the girl will be on July 1 will determine the position she may hold, according to committee member Peggy Raub. All of these positions offer a chance to promote milk and milk products as well as meet many new and interesting people on the local and state levels.
Girls are eligible to seek the title of Perry County Dairy Princess if they are a county resident and meet at least one of the following criteria: daughter of either a dairy farmer, farm manager or herdsman, or someone employed in a dairy-related industry; employed by a dairy-related business; have at least two head of dairy animals in a 4-H or FFA contest prior to May 1, 2008; or was a dairy maid or dairy ambassador for a full year.
The dairy princess must be at least 16 by July 1 and will not reach 24 by Dec. 31. A candidate must have parental consent if under 18, be single, never have been married or had children and is not allowed to marry during her reign.
The duties of the dairy princess include talks to business groups, parades, presentations to school groups and handing out dairy products at a variety of stores and events in Perry County, as well as at statewide events.
The dairy princess will have a variety of opportunities to take part in interesting activities, such as sporting events and major dairy events. She will have the opportunity to meet many people in and out of the dairy industry, from the county and throughout the state, and she will be eligible to compete for the title of Pennsylvania Dairy Princess at the state pageant in Harrisburg in September.
In order to compete for the state title, she must attend the Pennsylvania Dairy Princess and Promotion Service’s training seminar in July.
All candidates for county dairy princess will be required to present a three-to-five-minute minute skit and give a three-to-five-minute speech on the dairy industry or related topic at the Perry County Dairy Princess Pageant.
Interested individuals must contact Patti McLaughlin at 582-4847, Marel Raub at 834-6536, Peggy Raub at 834-4721 or Stacey O’Toole at 789-3618 by April 28.
