Sheryl Delozier defeated six other Republican candidates for the 88th Legislative District seat in the state house, previously held by Republican State Rep. Jerry Nailor who will retire after 20 years in service.
Delozier carried 2,379 votes in the win over Lowell Gates (2,179 votes). Republican Matthew Seagrist, Bill Cornell, Jeffrey Banzhoff, Ian Hayes and Michael Hancock also ran for the seat.
Delozier attributed her razor-thin victory to a “grass-roots” effort she made to reach voters, which meant knocking thousands of doors to help 88th district resident put a face to the name.
“The voters wanted to talk to the candidates on the ballot,” she said.
She said it was a difficult, hard-fought campaign.
“It was tough competition,” she said. “Anytime you have an open seat, you have to distinguish yourself from the rest of the other options.”
Delozier touted her experience serving under former Gov. Tom Ridge as a top official in the IMPACCT Commission and was endorsed by former Gov. Mark Schweiker, who took over for Ridge after he became director of Homeland Security in 2001.
Five local police organizations have also endorsed Delozier.
Delozier will move on to the general election in November against Democrat Margaret Stuski, who ran unopposed in the Democratic primary.
The 88th Legislative District is comprised of Lemoyne, Lower Allen Township, Upper Allen Township, New Cumberland, Shiremanstown, Mechanicsburg, Monroe Township and Wormleysburg’s 1st precinct.
