Giving circle gets creative for Mother’s Day
The Ladies’ Half will fund portraits of children with cancer or other life-threatening illnesses
A West Shore women’s giving circle was so impressed by the community support for its alternative gift fair last November that it decided to take on a new fund-raising project for Mother’s Day.
Affiliated with Flashes of Hope, a national nonprofit organization, The Ladies’ Half will sponsor a “Celebrate Mother!” gift fair this Saturday in Hampden Township.
At this fair, patrons can purchase the gift of a photo shoot for one of 100 children who will attend Camp Can-Do in Mt. Gretna for the first two weeks of August.
Flashes of Hope works with award-winning photographers to create uplifting portraits of children with cancer or other life-threatening illnesses. The goal is to help the children feel better about their changing appearance by celebrating it.
“These photos are treasures for the families that forever preserve the dignity and beauty of each child,” said Jeannie Kruidenier, program coordinator for the giving circle, who will schedule photo shoots with the photographers and the children. “This is a perfect gift for mother or any loved one, and a meaningful gift appreciated by a family forever.”
The cost to sponsor one child’s package of photos, proofs and a CD is $25.
“The giving is very evident in this community,” said Kruidenier, referencing the success of “Gifts that Give.”
At that November gift fair, the group raised $20,000 for local organizations to help people in need,
She is hopeful the group’s latest project will cover the entire cost of the children’s photographs.
The May 3 event, which will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hampden Community Recreation building on Sporting Hill Road, will also feature more than 16 vendors, including jewelry, gourmet food, a day spa, inspirational gifts and table jewelry.
