The Cumberland County Recycling & Waste Authority is holding a computers & electronics recycling drop-off event this weekend at the Cumberland County Service Center, 310 Allen Road, Carlisle.

The event will be held over two days. Materials will be accepted on Saturday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. until noon.

This program is intended to give the residents of Cumberland County an opportunity to recycle old computers and other electronic material. These materials contain metals such as lead, mercury, and cadmium, that, if not properly managed or contained, can threaten the environment.

According to the EPA, more than 2 million tons of used electronics are disposed of each year. Recycling used consumer electronics ensures that the metals in these materials will be dealt with properly and recovers valuable material from them to be used to make new products. Both resources and landfill space are thus saved.

Regional Computer Recycling & Recovery, LLC, (RCR&R) from Rochester, New York, competitively won the contract to accept, package, transport, and demanufacture the materials to recover the metal, plastic, and glass for recycling and/or beneficial reuse. RCR&R is charging $0.063 per pound for their services.

Items that will be collected free of charge from any county resident during the event include answering machines, camcorders, CD players, copiers, duplicators, DVD players, fax machines, hard drives, laptop computers, mainframe computers, microwaves, mobile phones, modems, pagers, desktop computers, printers, printed circuit boards, radios, remote controls, scanners, stereos, tape players, telephones, televisions, transparency makers, UPSs, VCRs, and word processors.

Unacceptable items include commercial waste, household trash, household hazardous waste, furniture, appliances, yard waste, and construction debris.

For further information or questions regarding acceptable or unacceptable materials, contact the Cumberland County Recycling & Waste Authority at (717) 240-6489.
