The Carlisle flower baskets are branching out uptown.
In a collaborative effort between Rotary, the Downtown Carlisle Association, Dickinson College, the Borough of Carlisle, Cumberland County and the Garden Club, the distinctive summertime hanging flower baskets were extended this week into the second block of North Hanover Street and the second block of West High Street.
“It’s a long-awaited and wonderful addition to the downtown,” said Karen Barone, Main Street manager for the Downtown Carlisle Association.
The additional flower baskets were made possible through donations from the Carlisle Garden Club, Dickinson College and the G.B. Stuart Foundation.
The Rotary Club provides the baskets and weekend maintenance of the current four blocks surrounding the Square, but it was not possible for the Rotary to maintain any additional baskets.
However, several organizations stepped up to make the expansion possible.
The Garden Club offered to fund the baskets on the second block of North Hanover Street, and Dickinson College agreed to fund the baskets on the second block of West High Street.
Tuckey Companies agreed to manufacture the 50 additional brackets to hang the baskets at a reduced rate, and the G.B. Stuart Foundation offered to pay for those brackets. The borough mounted the additional brackets on the light poles as its in-kind contribution to the project.
Cumberland County, responsible for watering the original four blocks of baskets during the week, agreed to include the two additional blocks in its daily watering duties. The Rotary will continue to water the original four blocks of baskets on the weekends, while Dickinson College will provide weekend watering on the additional western block.
The Downtown Carlisle Association will arrange for weekend volunteers to water the additional block of North Hanover Street. Anyone interested in helping to water on the weekends is asked to call the DCA at 245-2648.
