The Hammer makes his return
The Hammer is back.
And he’s coming out swinging at a good time.
After struggling through an absolute horrendous first half of the racing season, Lancaster’s Doug Esh put a big time sweep on the Posse over the weekend ending with a Saturday night win in the John Gleim, Jr. Excavating 56th Anniversary race at Lincoln Speedway.
Esh also won Friday night’s Mitch Smith Memorial at Williams Grove, completing the rarely feated sweep in local racing.
“You watch the leaderboard and you know who’s behind you is the best in the business,” said Esh of runner-up Fred Rahmer Saturday night. “I love beatin’ him more than racin’ with him. But he’s the master in lapped traffic and I knew I had to get through ‘em and get going and keep my momentum up.”
Esh, who started on the pole was never challenged in the 30-lap test. Not even from Rahmer, despite numerous yellow flags during the early laps.
Rahmer finished 3.13 seconds behind in the runner-up spot as Esh collected the big $5,600 payday, making it a $10,600 payday for the Leach Brothers Motorsports/Pancho’s Racing Products owned sprint car team over the weekend. It was his 19th career Lincoln win.
Brian Leppo finished third over Jeff Shepard and Cris Eash.
Sam Gallagher won the makeup thundercar feature from May 3 over Bob Bare, Rick Weaver, Kyle Martin and Larry Neiderer while Brian Walls won the regularly scheduled thundercar man over Martin, Neiderer, Gallagher and Joe Racine.
YOUNG GUNS TOP GROVE
Dylan Cisney put together his first career Super Sportsman feature win Saturday night at Williams Grove Speedway while Dillsburg’s Aaron Eichelberger also raced to victory.
Cisney, just 15 years old from Blairs Mills led all 20 laps to win the makeup feature rained out on June 28 over David Socks III, Carmen Perigo, Jr., Rick Barr and Paul Miller with Carlisle’s Frankie Herr, Dillsburg’s Ryan Rupp, Dillsburg’s Rich Eichelberger, Summerdale’s JR Fry and Bobby Hockenberry the top 10. Mechanicsburg’s Derek Locke was 11th, Newville’s Russ Mitten 12th and Carlisle’s Jake Raudabaugh 24th.
Aaron Eichelberger, who was running second in the first race before pitting with problems, led all 20 laps of the regularly scheduled feature for his second winning weekend in a row. He won at Lincoln last week.
Herr, John Garman, Jay Fannasy and Hockenberry were the top five finishers with John Stoner, R. Eichelberger, Rupp, Barr and Mechanicsburg’s Dave Berkheimer the top 10. Mitten was 11th, Locke 16th, Fry 18th while Cisney finished 24th after early race problems.
Bobby Beard won the 358 late model feature and also clinched the Williams Grove-TrailWay Speedway Shootout. He won over Craig Wagaman, Tyler Armstrong, Gene Knaub and Travis Mease.
Newville’s Doug Hoffman won both street stock features at the Grove.
His first win came over Kory Sites, Jim Salisbury, Kevin Sigler and Walt Lemmon while he defeated Sites, Gary Welsh, Sigler and Salisbury in the regular feature.
Brian Wentzel took the 4-cylinder stock car win over John Stoll, Jr. and Joe Jakubic.
HODNETT BACK ON TOP
Greg Hodnett returned to victory lane Saturday night at Port Royal Speedway with his second 25-lap 410 Sprint car win of the season.
Hodnett, of Thomasville raced by leader Rick Lafferty on lap 18 and drove away to his 10th career Port Royal and third overall this season over Todd Shaffer, Lafferty, Keith Kauffman and track points leader Alan Cole.
Port Royal’s Mitch Hack won for the first time this season in Port Royal late model action leading the final 13 laps to win over Jere Wierman, Tim Fedder, Tim Wilson and Waylon Wagner.
Tim Krape made it nine wins in pro stock competition over Derick Garman, Meade Hahn, Jim Palm and Devin Frey.
MILLER TOPS HAGERSTOWN
Gettysburg’s Jeremy Miller raced to his first late model win of the season Saturday at Hagerstown Speedway.
Miller’s win came in the Ernie’s 25 for super late models after taking the lead on lap 12 and then holding off Jason Covert for the win. Dan Stone, DJ Myers and Brent Smith were the top five finishers. Shermansdale’s Mike Lupfer finished 10th.
Wayne Walls, Jr. picked up his first win of the year in the late model sportsman feature over Brian Lessley, Ashley Barrett, Barry Miller and Andy Fries while Hans Stamberg won the pure stock main event.
KNAUB TOPS TRAILWAY
Dover’s Gene Knaub came out on top of a thrilling 25 lap 358 late model feature Friday at Trail-Way Speedway.
Knaub, the leading winner in the area in the limited late models, staged a race long battle with Bobby Beard before bringing home the win over Beard, Tyler Armstrong, Carlisle’s Scott Richwine and Bernie Beard.
Todd Miller took his firs thundercar win over Brad Shank and Gary Calimer, Jr.
Saturday night at Trail-Way, Isaac Sneeringer topped the 600 Micro Sprint main for the first time this season winning over Tim Glatfelter, Jim Brookens, Shippensburg’s Dwayne Gutshall and Robbie Kendal.. Enola’s Jake Murphy was eighth.
Billy Laughman was the 270 Micro winner over Jim Still, Sean McAndrew, Jim Myers and Cody Phillips.
OTHER WEEKEND ACTION
JJ Grasso became the leading winner on the URC Sprint tour with his third win of the year Saturday night at New Egypt Speedway. All of Grasso’s wins have came at the New Jersey track. He won over Chris Coyle, Ed Aiken, Billy Pauch and Gary Gollub.
Dillsburg’s Todd Spangler won Friday night’s PA 305 Sprint car feature at Path Valley Speedway Park over Boiling Springs’ Craig Laudermilch, Michael Wagner II, Mike Freet and Jim Kennedy.
Rodney Glass won the 600 Micro Sprints at Path Valley over Kevin Steele, Tim Glatfelter, Jake Murphy and Tom Kohler with Newville’s Tim Barrick eighth. Brian Marriott was the 270 Micro winner over Sean McAndrew, Colby Dice, Jason Houtz and Tom Tice while Tim Mertz was the Sidewinder 1000 winner over Ryan Greth, Stanley Fleming, Carlisle’s Rohan Beasley and Denny Landvater.
Bo Gordon won another 600 Micro Sprint feature Saturday at Shippensburg Speedway over Anston Bast, Jim Dawson, Dusty Foust and Kenny Harris. Other track winners were Keith Arnolt in the thundercars, Donny Stine in minis tocks, Gary Guise in 4-cylinder trucks and Ron Swope in 4-cylinder strictly stocks.
