Carlisle All-Stars completed their blitz through the Section 7 Tournament on Thursday evening with a tight 2-0 win over Caln Township in Newville.
“This is something the kids cherish,” said Carlisle manager Todd Hair, who deflected credit to his coach, Jeff Goodling. “They know this is something special that happened.”
With the win Carlisle, which outscored its opponents 18-3 and allowed two hits in 18 innings, earned the section’s lone berth to the 11-12-year-old Pennsylvania East Division Tournament hosted by the Council Rock Northampton Little League.
Carlisle opens play in Richboro, located between Allentown and Philadelphia, Monday at 3 p.m. The team’s opponent will be announced this weekend.
On Thursday, Brian Goodling spun a complete-game one-hitter with six strikeouts to effectively handcuff Caln Township for the second time in four days. On Monday, the 12-year-old threw a perfect game against Township.
“He pitched another great game,” Hair said. “He didn’t have as many strikeouts this time but he had good fielding behind him.”
Hair anticipated a tougher road for Goodling on Thursday but the pitcher buckled down and delivered another outing for the ages.
“That’s our best pitcher,” Hair said. “That’s who we trust in the championship game.”
Goodling was a key cog in a bigger structure that played well together and, even on a night when the normally loud bats were silent, found a way to win.
In the third inning Fred Griggs raced home on a passed ball — the second of the inning — to break the scoreless tie. Garrett Blank’s single through the left side scored Goodling for the final margin.
Hair said the section crown is Carlisle’s first in five years being affiliated with the tournament that ends with the Little League World Series in Williamsport next month.
“This is a tough thing to do so they’re really proud of what they did,” Hair said. “We’re proud of what they accomplished.”
