Tuesday's Sentinel police reports
Here are Tuesday's Sentinel police reports:
Police investigating fatal Perry County crash
State police at Newport continue to investigate the crash Sunday in Perry County that killed on man and sent another to Penn State Hershey Medical Center with major injuries.
The crash happened about 1 a.m. on Juniata Parkway in Howe Township, police said. Both driver Garrett M. Foltz, 21, and passenger Christopher Firkal, 20, both of Duncannon, were thrown from the 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier after it left the road, apparently traveling at a high rate of speed, and began to roll over before coming to rest leaning against an embankment on its roof.
Neither man wore a seat belt, police said.
Firkal’s body was to the west of the car, out of the line of sight, police said, and was not found until about 8 a.m.
“Police and local fire companies did do a cursory search of the area” upon arriving at the scene, said Sgt. Charles Ringer, pointing out that the lack of visibility at that time of night didn’t help.
Firkal’s body, Ringer said, was “a significant distance” away. Perry County Coroner said Monday that Firkal was pronounced dead at the scene, and that an autopsy was scheduled for 8 a.m. today.
No report of Foltz’s condition was available by press time Tuesday.
Court records indicate that on July 17 Foltz waived a preliminary hearing in Perry County on charges of a first-offense DUI and a traffic violation stemming from an incident on May 24.
Hospital staff said this morning that Foltz was treated and released.
Man killed in Franklin County shooting
An 81-year-old man was killed and a second man wounded after a shooting incident Monday near Mercersburg in Montgomery Township, Franklin County.
State police at Chambersburg had not released the identity of the dead man by press time this morning, but they report that he died after shooting Bryan E. Kendell, 40, Mercersburg.
Police say the two men have been embroiled in an ongoing dispute.
Police say the two men became entangled in an argument around 7:35 a.m. Monday in the 9300 block of Blue Spring Road and Kendell was shot.
The older man died of injuries sustained during the altercation, police say.
Kendell was flown to Altoona Hospital. Police said he was in stable condition Monday afternoon.
Man charged with assault
Paul Cherry was arrested and charged with simple assault, terroristic threats, false imprisonment, harassment and criminal mischief following a July 23 incident, according to Upper Allen Township police.
Police said a woman came to the station about 10 a.m. July 23 to report a domestic assault she said happened earlier that morning. The woman said Cherry, 41, of the 900 block of Gettysburg Pike, assaulted her in the presence of a younger female and an infant for about an hour, police said. Before she could escape, the woman said, Cherry grabbed her throat and threatened to kill her if she called police.
Police obtained a warrant to arrest Cherry Friday and took him into custody at the station when he came to provide a statement about the incident, police said.
Cherry was lodged in Cumberland County Prison on $15,000 bail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing at 11 a.m. Aug. 4, police said.

Carlisle police say Kirk Chalmer Gobin, 41, pumped $48.39 worth of gas at the Sheetz at 1900 Ritner Highway at 4:47 p.m. on June 2, then left without paying. The incident was captured on the store’s video system.
Gobin was charged with one count of retail theft of fuel. Gobin’s bail on the previous charges is $250,000, according to court records.
