Mechanicsburg may have its own walk of fame.

On behalf of Main Street Mechanicsburg, business owner Susan Kiskis made a presentation to borough council Tuesday night outlining a plan to attract more tourists and business downtown.

If approved, the “Wrench Walk” would line the sidewalks at the intersection of South Market and East Main streets.

Council tabled a motion to approve the walk until the Aug. 19 to allow members time to study whether it would comply with the borough’s existing comprehensive plan.

The plan as presented would replace a concrete block of pavement with a plaque and a bronze wrench featuring the name of the person honored and the sponsor’s logo.

Main Street Mechanicsburg would raise all of the money necessary to put the plaques in place.

Famous ‘Mechanics’

The idea is to highlight famous people from or native to Mechanicsburg.

If the walk is implemented, the first “honorary Mechanic” would be Charlie Jones, an author and Mechanicsburg native.

Also slated to get bronze wrenches are Karen Bill, a female boxer born in Mechanicsburg. Her career stretched from 1999 till 2002.

Andrew Kevin Walter, the screenwriter responsible for writing the movies “Se7en,” “8MM” and “Sleepy Hollow” would also receive a bronze wrench.

The plan is to install three bronze wrenches per year. Bret Michaels and Rikki Rocket, members of the glam-rock band Poison, would receive golden wrenches in the second year if the program goes into effect, as would Shawn Abner, a former Major League Baseball player.

Jon Ritchie, a former NFL player, and Stacey Williams a former supermodel, would be set to receive bronze wrenches in the third year of the program.

“This would give Mechanicsburg a bit of notoriety,” Kiskis said. “It also would bring more residents downtown.”

“I think it’s a good idea,” Councilman Roger Ciecierski said, “but I think there is a lot of coordination that has to go into it.”

Borough manager search

Additionally, the borough has yet to hire a new manager, although the list of candidates has been narrowed from seven to six.

“We did have one person who withdrew,” Councilwoman Linda Humes said.

Council President Rodney Whitcomb said at this point arrangements were being made to conduct interviews.

“It’s a prime, important issue,” Charlie Ryder, vice president of borough council, said

In other business, council voted to promote Timothy Dyer to the rank of sergeant in the Mechanicsburg Police Department on a probationary basis effective no later than Aug. 31.
