Carlisle man pleads in child cocaine case
A Carlisle man accused of allowing a 2-year-old girl to ingest cocaine while in his care pleaded guilty to one count of endangering the welfare of children Tuesday.
Appearing before Cumberland County Judge Edward Guido, Phillip Suano Wagner, 27, of the 800 block of North West Street, said “Yes, sir” and “No, sir” to Guido’s questions but made no comment on the incident. The plea to the first-degree misdemeanor was accepted in full satisfaction of all charges, with charges of unlawful possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia dismissed.
According to court records, Carlisle police went on Aug. 6, 2007, to Carlisle Regional Medical Center, which reported it had a 2-year-old girl who had cocaine and benzodiazepines in her system. The girl was treated at the hospital and released, police said.
Police then executed a search warrant at the home on Aug. 7 and found a white tablet later determined to contain cocaine on the floor where Wagner and the girl slept, along with drug paraphernalia in a safe belonging to Wagner.
Police interviewed the owners of the home, who indicated that Wagner “passed out” and was unable to supervise the girl, they said.
Wagner, who will be sentenced at 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 2, is currently serving a 4.5- to 10-year sentence in state prison on a robbery charge dating from Oct. 18, 2007, at Trindle Mini Mart in Hampden Township. He pleaded guilty to that charge and was sentenced in June by Cumberland County Judge J. Wesley Oler.
At that time, Wagner’s attorney, Cumberland County Senior Assistant Public Defender Linda Hollinger, said the robbery incident stemmed from Wagner’s drug addiction.
