Newville fires police officer
Newville Borough police officer Aaron Nigro has been relieved of his duties.
“Based upon a review of his performance during his probationary period and based upon recommendations of the Chief of Police and the Mayor, his performance has been found to be unsatisfactory,” according to a statement from Borough Council, which voted 6-0 Tuesday to discontinue Nigro’s employment.
The Big Spring School District opted not to renew its contract for a school resource officer.
Nigro of South Middleton Township, was hired last year as a part-time officer assigned to Big Spring High School as the school resource officer.
But Nigro ended up on the wrong side of the law after several incidents.
He was arrested in March and suspended without pay after being charged with theft.
According to state police at Carlisle, Nigro was intoxicated when he called Moonlight Taxi at about 2:30 a.m. for a ride home. At the intersection of routes 74 and 641, Nigro jumped from the cab and ran away without paying his $5.60 fare. He was charged with theft of service.
Those charges were dropped in June, when the cab driver failed to show up for the preliminary hearing.
In a separate incident in March, Nigro, who is also a Pennsylvania State Constable, fired his gun while in uniform after scuffling with a man in Perry County.
According to state police at Newport, Nigro was in the parking lot of a restaurant along Route 34 in Carroll Township, to collect fines and costs of a traffic warrant, when he observed that the man he was there to meet was intoxicated. Nigro attempted to detain him until state police could arrive, police said, began to scuffle with the man, pushing him to the ground. The man got into his truck and attempted to drive off when Nigro fired his gun at the truck tires, according to officials. No charges were filed against Nigro in that incident.
In February, Nigro was involved in an incident in North Middleton Township when he attempted to serve a warrant at a home on Longs Gap Road. He got into a scuffle with the homeowner and ended up shooting the homeowner’s dog after it bit him. He was not charged in that incident.
