Four Newville residents have been designated “town historians.”

Joan Brehm, Jane Graham, Craig Kennedy and Robert Over received proclamations from Mayor John Gatten on Tuesday.

Brehm was recognized for her public service to the borough, as well as for her research and writing of the historical sketch of the borough featured on the town’s Web site, serving on the borough’s Newsletter Committee and for her work in obtaining historical markers throughout the borough.

Graham was recognized for her community service as well as for her service as director and president of the John Graham Library board of directors. She has also helped to promote the historical heritage of Newville by conducting tours and researching information on the Big Spring Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Kennedy, a published author of several books, including “Pennsylvania Fairs and Festivals” and “The Babes in the Woods,” as well as other writing projects, was also recognized for his walking tours of the borough. He is co-founder of the Fountain Festival and has served on the Newsletter Committee.

Over was noted for his service to the borough as a member of the Shade Tree Commission and his former service as councilman and mayor. He also has volunteered “hundreds of hours” as a founding member of the Fountain Festival and he has served on several area boards.

The residents were nominated by Over in May, when he asked Borough Council to recognize Brehm, Graham and Kennedy as historians, but council members said such a designation was not within their powers.

Gatten said such proclamations fall under his direction and presented them to each of the four during Tuesday’s borough council meeting.

“I urge all citizens of the borough to join with me in extending (them) the sincerest appreciation of the community for distinguished service to our borough,” Gatten said.
