Line dance club asks to rent community center
Site might attract SU students in addition to local families.
Line dancing at the Shippensburg community center could bring the center back to life and provide some regular revenue to the Borough of Shippensburg, Rick Pace told borough council.
Pace proposed having a group he’s affiliated with bring the LongHorn Dance Club to the community center for regular dances. He suggested that rent from his group could bring in as much as $800 to $1,000 a month for the borough.
Currently, LongHorn is holding its alcohol-free dances at Pleasant Hall Volunteer Fire Co. The Pleasant Hall Web site (www.pleasanthallfire.org) says the dances are held Sunday nights. Admission is $5.
Pace said he has experience with local line dancing because he was affiliated with the Tractor Twang group in Newville before he started working with LongHorn.
“LongHorn is all about the community,” Pace said. “We give a lot of money back to the EMS and fire departments.”
Mayor Bruce Hockersmith, who is also executive director of the Shippensburg Area Chamber of Commerce, suggested to Pace that the “chamber of commerce would probably be very happy to work with you.”
Joe Hockersmith, vice president of borough council, told Pace that council would consider the dance club’s suggestion after the park and recreation committee has had a chance to review the matter.
Pace said about 65 to 125 dancers, including kids and moms and dads, come to LongHorn dances. He’s been hearing more complaints about how much it is costing people to drive to Pleasant Hall.
In addition, Pace said line dances in the borough might attract more students from Shippensburg University than the dances held at Pleasant Hall.
