Port Royal Speedway closes the curtain on the 2008 racing season with this weekend’s 41st running of the Tuscarora 50.

With the “Night Before the 50” scheduled for Friday night, Saturday night serves as the biggie for the 410 Sprint car teams racing for the $10,000 top prize for the win in the second biggest race of the season at the Juniata County Speedway.

It appears now Hurricane Hanna might play a role in Saturday night’s racing. Should the event be rained out, it will be held Sunday evening.

This weekend will also serve as the final Cleveland Brothers/Ramsey’s Car Wash Challenge at the Port for the Sprint car drivers with one driver winning a brand new J & J Chassis from Jack Elam, who will be on hand for the event.

Doug Esh claimed his first ever Tuscarora 50 win a year ago and is hoping to return to the stage at the Port with another win Saturday night.

Lance Dewease won the event in 2006 but will not be on hand this season as he continues to chase the O’Reilly All Star point championship.

Of course, 2008 Port champion Todd Shaffer will lead the Port Royal regulars in the event after a Labor Day win. Shaffer will be joined by Port regulars Greg Hodnett, Mark Smith, Keith Kauffman, Mike Erdley, Alan Cole and more with outside invaders including 2005 and four-time “50” winner Fred Rahmer, Brian Leppo, Stevie Smith and more.

Also on tap this week at Port Royal will be the Chili Cookoff for charity and an autograph session with sprint car drivers.

SCHATZ STILL

HOLDING ON

Jason Meyers closed to within 60 points of Donny Schatz in the battle for the World of Outlaws championship but Schatz returned to victory lane Tuesday night while Meyers dropped out in 23rd allowing Schatz to pull back to a 104 point lead over Meyers.

Schatz’s win came at Oregon’s Cottage Grove Speedway where he won over Craig Dollansky, Jared Ridge, Roger Crockett and Danny Lasoski. Lucas Wolfe had a sixth place finish.

Jason Solwold was the WoO winner Saturday night at Skagit Speedway but it was Joey Saldana scoring the biggest win of the weekend in the $25,000 to win N C Machinery Caterpillar Clash at Skagit. He defeated Meyers, Steve Kinser, Schatz and Dollansky.

Kraig Kinser finally got his first win of the season in the Tony Stewart Motorsports sprinter Monday night at Grays Harbor Raceway over Jayme Barnes, Steve Kinser, Lasoski and Chad Kemenah.

The Outlaws are in action this weekend at Silver Dollar Speedway for the annual Gold Cup.

DEWEASE FADING

Following three events over the Labor Day weekend on the All Star tour, Fayetteville’s Lance Dewease has fallen 58 points behind Dale Blaney in his quest for the $50,000 prize.

Dewease had finishes of ninth, fifth and 13th last weekend while Blaney had a fifth, then won Saturday night at Attica Raceway Park and another fifth Sunday night.

Tim Shaffer won Friday at Lernerville while Tyler Walker won Sunday night at Hilltop Speedway.

The All Stars have three events remaining on their 2008 schedule.
