E-town driver picks up a career win

Mike Erdley picked a great time to win his first feature of the season at Port Royal Speedway.

The Elizabethville driver took the lead on lap 20 of Sunday night’s Tuscarora 50 at Port Royal and held on to capture his biggest career win in the final race of the year at the track.

Erdley, the 2006 Port Royal track champion, earned over $10,000 for his second career Port Royal win in the Randy Lisi owned sprinter.

Erdley started second in the main but followed Brian Leppo for the first 19 laps before taking the top spot.

Once in front, Erdley kept the field at bay for the big win.

Thomasville’s Greg Hodnett came on strong during the final 25 laps of the race to finish a close runner-up after starting ninth on the grid. Hodnett was running seventh at the halfway mark.

Leppo, of New Oxford finished third with Phoenixville and 2008 Lincoln Speedway champ Brian Montieth fourth and Port’s all time leading winner Keith Kauffman, of Mifflintown fifth.

Completing the top 10 were 16th starting Lance Dewease, 20th starting Mark Smith, 18th starting Cody Darrah, Stevie Smith and 23rd starting Doug Esh.

Heats for the 34 cars on hand were won by Blane Heimbach, Dave Hahn, Cliff Brian and Montieth. Chad Layton won the Consolation and Leppo won the Dash.

Todd Shaffer led all 30 laps to win the Friday night “Night Before the 50” preliminary event for his 89th career Port Royal win.

Erdley finished second in that event over Leppo, Kauffman and Montieth with Fred Rahmer, Esh, Dewease, Mike Wagner and Layton the top 10.

ROHRBAUGH WINS AGAIN

For the sixth time this season and 17th time in his career, York’s Jeff Rohrbaugh came out on top of the 358 Sprint car feature at Trail-way Speedway.

Friday night, Rohrbaugh came from 12th starting spot to take the lead on lap 14 and was then declared the winner on lap 16 when rains hit the speedway causing cancellation of the remainder of the show.

Rohrbaugh’s win also clinched his third straight Trail-Way 358 Sprint car track championship in the Roy Vincent owned JEI chassis.

Randy Whisler finished second over Randy Davis, Jr., Darren Schott and Joe Trone, Jr.

The thundercar and limited stock features were postponed until this Friday night.

FORSYTHE TOPS GROVE

Glenndon Forsythe also came out on top of a rain shortened 358 Sprint car feature Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway.

Forsythe started on the pole and led the first 12 laps of the event when rain hit the Grove. The race was made official with the Aspers driver taking the win, his second of the season at the track.

Adrian Shaffer was second over Chad Criswell, Adam Wilt and Aaron Ott.

The Super Sportsman feature was rained out and will be made up on Friday night, September 19 while the 600 micro sprint feature will not be made up and all drivers were paid.

SPANGLER TAKES PATH VALLEY

Dillsburg’s Todd Spangler won Friday night’s PA 305 Sprint car main at Path Valley Speedway Park leading the entire distance.

Spangler defeated Tyler Bear, Michael Heckman, Doug Distasio and Jim Kennedy.

Ben Murphy, now living in North Carolina, piloted the Henchcraft 1000cc micro sprint to a win in the Sidewinders feature over Jason Morrison, Tim Mertz, Ryan Greth and Mechanicsburg’s Chad Hough.

Steve Whary won the 270 Micro Sprint feature over Brian Marriott, Sean McAndrew, Ryan McAndrew and Tim Mertz.

Jeremy Ott took the thundercar win over Tom Crum and Chris Anderson while Kevin Steele came out on top of 600 Micro action over Tyler Walton, Dwayne Gutshall, Jesse Fitz and Keith McIntyre.

LOTS OF RAIN

Mother Nature forced several area speedway’s to cancel Saturday night racing cards.

Hagerstown Speedway lost its final points show of the year as did Selinsgrove Speedway.

Susquehanna and Shippensburg Speedway’s also were rained out Saturday night.

Port Royal and Lincoln Speedway lost Saturday shows but used Sunday as rain dates
