A doctor’s office with a long history and several thousand patients in the Carlisle area will close its doors at the end of the year.

Belvedere Family Practice will close at the end of the year when Dr. George P. Branscum Jr. retires.

Branscum, who has been practicing in Carlisle for 36 years, will go into “semi-retirement” and will continue to treat only his patients in nursing homes.

“I have reached this decision only after a great deal of thought and soul searching,” Branscum wrote in a letter to patients. “The stress of being a physician in today’s environment is growing and I would like to take some time to be with my family and catch up on some of the hobbies I have neglected until now.”

Branscum said he has tried to find another physician to take over, but has been unable to do so, despite the help of Carlisle Regional Medical Center’s recruitment assistance.

Two other doctors in the practice left earlier this year.

Belvedere Family Practice is located in the Belvedere Medical Center, which was built in 1972 to accommodate the then newly-formed Belvedere Medical Corp., a multi-specialty practice. New buildings were added in 1979 and 1982.

The closing of Belvedere Family Practice does not affect other practices within BMC, including internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology or surgery and dermatology.
