Houseal shoots 78 to win all-girls event
Bogush saves 16 in Susquenita boys' soccer win; late goals lead Northern field hockey past Indians

The Second Annual Big Spring High School Regional Girls Open Golf Tournament was played Thursday at Cumberland Golf Club.
In the end, it was Northern’s Madison Houseal taking the top spot with a score of 78. Houseal beat out 29 other girls from 15 area schools in the girls only event — something unique to high school golf.
“What a great place for area girls to showcase their talents,” Big Spring head coach Rick Stokes.
Houseal edged out Chambersburg’s Mallory Cortis, who finished in second place with an 80. Big Spring’s Kathleen Woods’ 87 was good enough for fourth place — just behind Solanco’s Amber Roher (86). Kacy Straub of Chambersburg rounded out the Top 5 with an 88. Boiling Springs’ Alexa Elias (89) finished sixth and Big Spring’s Rachel Helm (89) was seventh.
Boys’ Soccer
Susquenita 1, Northern 0
Matt Nagengast scored on a penalty kick in the 36th minute and the Blackhawks held on to take the 1-0 victory over the Polar Bears. As a team, Northern out-shot Susquenita 17-8.
Blackhawks goalkeeper Mark Bogush recorded 16 saves, including a stop of a penalty kick in the 65th minute.
Susquenita (3-4-2) hosts Waynesboro on Tuesday.
Cedar Cliff 3, CD East 0
The Colts scored three second-half goals to break open a 3-0 victory over the Panthers. Joey Duncanson, Andrew Rearick and Brett Snyder earned goals for Cedar Cliff while teammates George Holevas and Alex Kirby added assists.
The Colts out-shot CD East 14-8.
Cedar Cliff (5-5) hosts CV on Saturday.
Shippensburg 3, East Pennsboro 0
The Greyhounds blanked the Panthers 3-0. David Gerlach, Kelly Hess and James Kiama each netted goals for Ship, while Zack Piper and Ian Gayman contributed assists.
The Hounds out-shot East Penn 13-1 and held a 7-0 corner kick advantage.
Shippensburg improves to 5-3.
Greenwood 3, Bible Baptist 0
The Bobcats couldn’t find the scoreboard in a 3-0 loss to the Wildcats. Bible Baptist was out-shout 19-15, while Bobcats goalkeeper Josh Buser made eight saves.
Bible Baptist (3-2-1) travels to Berks Christian today.
Trinity 7, Harrisburg 0
Four different players scored goals for the Shamrocks in their team’s 7-0 win over the Cougars. Scott Blackledge, Tommy Herstek and Matt Gutshall each scored twice with teammate Jac Colomiso netting one.
Trinity out-shot Harrisburg 27-7 and improved to 8-2.
Big Spring 3, Waynesboro 0
The Bulldogs shut out the Indians 3-0. Alex Belanger scored twice for Big Spring while teammate Jacob Eshelman scored once. Garrett Feuchtenberger, Rayne Barrick and Austin Shover each added assists.
Big Spring improved to 3-2-2.
Field Hockey
Northern 2, Susquehanna Twp. 1
The Indians struck first, but it was the Polar Bears scored back-to-back goals in the final minutes of the second half to earn the 2-1 victory. Audrey Eberly earned one goal with one assist, and teammate Dani Cappellett added a goal.
Northern was out-shot 10-8 and out-cornered 6-0. Goalies Heather Urey and Margaret Ruth combined for nine saves. Ruth also stopped a penalty stroke in the game.
The Polar Bears (6-4-1) travel to Waynesboro on Monday.
Lower Dauphin 3, Mechanicsburg 0
The Wildcats were shut out by the Falcons 3-0. Lower Dauphin’s Carrie Diamond netted all three of her team’s goals for the hat trick.
Mechanicsburg was held without a shot or penalty corner.
The Wildcats (6-2-1) travel to the Governor Mifflin Tournament on Saturday.
Camp Hill 3, Middletown 0
Three first-half goals were enough to lead the Lions past the Blue Raiders 3-0. Katherine Osevala scored twice and added one assist for Camp Hill, while teammate Liz Lucius scored once. Molly Gilroy contributed an assist as well.
The Lions (4-3) travel to the Buckskin Classic on Saturday.
Girls’ Volleyball
Cedar Cliff 3, Lower Dauphin 0
The Colts handled the Falcons in three games 25-22, 25-16, 25-19. Cedar Cliff’s Katie Lake earned 24 kills, while teammates Jillian Rebraca and Ashley Lavender recorded seven and five kills, respectively.
The Colts (6-1) host the Cedar Cliff Invitational on Saturday.
Trinity 3, Scotland 0
The Shamrocks swept the Kaydettes 25-13, 25-21, 25-13. Trinity’s Maureen Reilly had seven aces, eight kills, 2.5 blocks and 10 digs. Teammate Danielle Ythier recorded three kills, five blocks and 10 digs, while Katie Palkovic had 23 assists.
The Shamrocks (5-2) travels to the East meets West Invitational at State College High School on Saturday.
James Buchanan 3, Boiling Springs 0
The Rockets took all three games against the Bubblers 25-16, 25-23, 25-17.
For Boiling Springs, Elizabeth Hanniford had five kills, five blocks and two aces. Teammate Jane Riddle recorded four kills with three aces and two blocks, and Missy Lobaugh added 16 assists with four aces.
Mechanicsburg 3, Waynesboro 0
The Wildcats shut out the Maidens 25-19, 25-14, 25-21. Mechanicsburg’s Erin Flick earned 12 kills, Emily Frazer had nine kills with six blocks, and Shelby Cassell recorded two kills with 15 assists.
The Wildcats (6-0) host Red Land on Tuesday.
Carlisle 3, Central Dauphin 2
The Thundering Herd fended off a rallying Rams squad for the 26-24, 25-17, 23-25, 22-25, 16-14 victory. For Carlisle, Kelsea Ashworth had 14 kills with six digs, Heather Bowman recorded 13 kills with 25 digs and three aces, Chelsey Bowser earned 14 kills with 23 digs and three aces, Allie Mosser contributed 47 assists with 17 digs and two aces, Arielle Williamson had 16 digs with one ace, and Chelsea Hollowell recorded 13 digs.
The Thundering Herd (4-2) travel to the State College Tournament on Saturday.
Gettysburg 3, Red Land 1
The Warriors downed the Patriots in four games 25-14, 25-14, 21-25, 25-11. Red Land’s Rebecca Plummer had seven kills, Casey June recorded five kills, Kristen Manzo earned 16 assists with two aces, Alyssa Mitchell had seven digs and Lindsay Goas recorded four aces.
Red Land (3-3) travels to Mechanicsburg on Tuesday.
Cumberland Valley 3, Central Dauphin East 0
The Eagles topped the Panthers in three games 25-20, 25-21, 25-8. Maddie Harbick had six aces with six kills and four blocks.
CV improved to 3-3.
Bible Baptist 3, York Country Day 0
The Bobcats routed York Country Day 25-10, 25-14, 25-20 to improve to 7-1. No additional information was provided.

Northern 4, Lower Dauphin 3
The Polar Bears won three of four singles matches in a 4-3 victory over the Falcons.
In singles, Northern’s Jenna Hessert defeated Grace Conway 6-3, 6-4; Polar Bears’ Jayne Whitcomb beat Shelly Jones 6-3, 6-4; Lower Dauphin’s Rachael Lobell defeated Amy Biggs 6-4, 6-2; Northern’s Heather Miller beat Corinne Gardner 7-6(7-1), 6-2.
In doubles, Whitcomb/Taylor Nicholson defeated Conway/Jones 3-6, 6-2, 6-0; Lower Dauphin’s Erin Cooney/Sarah Struzzi beat Morgan Fahey/Amelia Atkins 6-0, 6-1; Falcons’ Kaity Diskerud/Kailynn Dunkle beat Emily Macskimming.Jess Newcomer 6-1, 6-2.
Camp Hill 5, East Pennsboro 2
The Lions won four of five singles matches in a 5-2 victory over the Panthers.
In singles, Camp Hill’s Liz Clark defeated Shannon Kelly 7-6(7-3), 6-3; Lions’ Callie McKeon beat Meghan Pasquarette 6-3, 6-3; Camp Hill’s Jess Taleff defeated Courtney Swisher 6-1, 6-4; Lions’ Meghan Leach won by default; East Penn’s Amanda Grigg beat Emily Arndt 8-7, 7-4.
In doubles, Camp Hill’s Emily McKlosky/Emme Kadel defeated Michelle Dang/Capri Morey 8-6; Panthers’ Claire Keefauver/Krista Reynolds beat Abby Talbert/Aminah Ahmed 8-4.
Camp Hill improves to 5-4.

Bishop McDevitt’s Joe Beveridge set the pace early with a new Northern cross country course record but it didn’t stop Carlisle from sweeping the quad meet.
Beveridge’s time of 16:35 broke a three-year-old course record of 16:43, set by Bryan Ulrich of Susquenita in 2005, as well as East Pennsboro runner Ryan Blood’s venue record of 16:37, set in 2002.
John Foster of Northern finished second at 17:11, and Carlisle took the following four spots with Will Hoover finishing third.
Herd’s Kyle Hurston, fresh off a record-setting performance at Chambersburg, sat out Thursday with a minor injury.

Northern bunched five runners in the Top 10 to snag three victories in the girls’ quad meet at Northern High School.
Hershey’s Emma Shank finished first at 19:56 -- the eighth-fastest time in the course’s history, above former Big Spring runner Amanda Raudabaugh and below Chambersburg’s Sarah Morrison.
Polar Bears’ Taryn Weaver, Abby Wong and Kaylin DelVecchio filled in the following three places with Carlisle’s Colleen Smith finishing fifth.
Several runners fell in the first corner of the race, prompting a restart.
Boiling Springs boys 26, Big Spring 29
The Bubblers edged the Bulldogs 26-29, placing three of the top four finishers.
Big Spring’s Sam Brandt won the race at 18:25. Boiling Springs’ Greg Derk finished second at 18:37.
Boiling Springs 19, Big Spring 36
The Bubbler girls also won, 19-36, securing the top three spots.
Boiling Springs’ Krissy Lobaugh took first at 22:49, while teammate Nicole Sunderland came in second at 23.53. The top Bulldog finisher was Katie Johnson in fourth at 25:05.
