Seven area municipalities awarded sewage grants
Seven townships in Cumberland and northern York counties have been awarded more than $19,000 in sewage facilities enforcement grants.
They are Lower Frankford, North Newtown, Penn, South Middleton and Upper Frankford in Cumberland County and Carroll and Franklin in York County.
“Properly built sewers prevent contamination of both land and water,” said Sen. Pat Vance, R-31. “By assisting municipalities with the financial aspect of implementing sewer regulations, we are protecting not only the health of humans, but also the entire environment.”
Vance’s district includes all of Cumberland County plus Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County.
Sewage facilities enforcement grants are used to reimburse 50 percent of eligible expenses for performing state sewage regulations.
Lower Frankford received $440; North Newton, $966; Penn, $1,305; South Middleton, $3,899; Upper Frankford, $544; Carroll Township, $9,590; and Franklin, $3,020.
The state sewage regulations are outlined in Pennsylvania Sewage Facilities Act 537. The purpose of the act was to correct existing sewage disposal problems and prevent future problems through proper planning of all types of sewage facilities and permitting of individual or community on-lot disposable systems as well as setting uniform standards for designing on-lot disposable systems.
