Vendor makes kettle corn business a family affair
This year’s 44th annual National Apple Harvest Festival in Adams County was David Pacoe’s 9th year selling his family’s kettle corn.
Pacoe, his brothers and his father slaved in the back of their tent over hot kettles and propane gas trying to get the bags of kettle corn ready for sale. By Saturday afternoon, they expected a rush for the product.
“By the afternoon, our stock is usually depleted,” Pacoe said. “They don’t mind waiting, but we like to get it to them as fast as possible, since everyone is used to fast food. That way, we also get it to them hot, though we do let it cool of first so it doesn’t melt the bag.”
Using a sweet and salty recipe, the business was started by Pacoe’s father, also named David Pacoe, in Butler, Pa. near Pittsburgh. They’ve since branched out to the surrounding area.
“We travel all over West Virginia, Maryland, New York and Ohio,” Pacoe said. “We just pick up our tents and trailers and go anywhere.”
Pacoe will continue to sell kettle corn at the National Apple Harvest Festival when it reopens on Saturday, Oct. 11.
