Former Silver Springs Community Fire Company member James Cooley Childs IV was arrested Oct. 1 on accusations that he used a company gas credit card without authorization to put nearly $60 worth of gasoline into his vehicle, according to Silver Spring Township police.

Police said Wednesday that Childs, 29, of the 400 block of Linden Street, Mechanicsburg, had been suspended from his duties on charges of conduct unbecoming a firefighter. While in that period of suspension from the company, Childs entered the fire department building at 6471 Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg, and took the card, returning it afterward, police said.

Childs’ bail was set at $5,000, and he was scheduled to have a preliminary hearing before Cumberland County Magisterial District Judge Thomas Placey today on charges of theft, theft by deception, burglary, criminal trespass and access device fraud.
